Dr. Olivier Huebscher is Assistant Professor of Applied Brass at Mount Allison University, after having received his Doctorate in Horn Performance at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
An accomplished international chamber musician, I have performed with Volante Winds at the prestigious Fischoff Chamber Music Competition as well as being featured the Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival. Volante Winds has also toured extensively throughout the United States giving concerts and masterclasses at various colleges and Universities.
I have also performed in Europe as part of the Festival Internacional de Música Clásica in Vilagarcia Spain.
I have been featured on a recording of Mahler’s Symphony No 9 with the Kammermahler ensemble. I have been a member of Santa Monica Symphony, American Youth Symphony, Columbus Philharmonic and Redlands Symphony as well as being a finalist for Macau Symphony and semi-finalist for New World Symphony. My performance experience includes playing in sections with legendary performers such as Dale Clevenger, Jeff Nelsen and Elizabeth Freimuth. My teaching style relies on simplifying breathing and focusing on achieving the best possible musical results. I take into account each student's goals and desires and tailor lessons to get the end result they want. I have worked with many beginning students as well, so whether your goal is an upcoming school or ensemble audition or simply trying to sound as beautiful as possible I will help you achieve your goals.
I focus on beauty of sound and engaged music making and as a result my students have won places in the Chicago Youth Symphony, Sacramento Youth Symphony, Roanoke Youth Symphony and Superior Ratings at the NYSSMA State Solo Competition.
I also have a minor in music theory as well as years of theory tutor experience ranging from teaching how to read music notation to Schenkerian analysis.
Assistant Professor of Applied Brass at Mount Allison University, ranked the top undergraduate university in Canada 20 times in the past 28 years by Maclean's magazine, a record unmatched by any other university
Olivier was great to work with. Olivier was very helpful with being able to hear and correct issues that my son was having with his horn. My son was comfortable with taking lessons and enjoyed the lesson times. I recommend Olivier.
We signed up when our local instructor moved and no others in town were accepting new students. For context, our high schooler has been playing french horn for 5 years, and has primarily been preparing for district/state solo contests this semester.
Oliver is great. He has provided helpful instruction, advice about performance nerves, and has been super-flexible in scheduling.
Honestly, we were initially a little skeptical of online lessons. It took a few weeks to get into a routine, but now they are working out quite well. An advantage to the online format has been how easy it is to re-schedule when we have one-off conflicts, and it's actually kind of nice having lessons in your own home.
In a perfect world, we would love to take lessons from Oliver in-person!
Great first lesson! Olivier is very thorough and very encouraging, and my daughter is very happy with him!
My daughter had a wonderful first lesson! We are looking forward to many more! Olivier is encouraging and works with students at their level.
My daughter started taking lessons over a month ago and has vastly improved her playing thanks to Oliver
Great first lesson, learned new notes and techniques. Good teacher.
Olivier has without a doubt helped my daughter improve in ways that I (as a former French Horn player) could not. He is patient and pleasant as well as intelligent. Most importantly he has given my daughter the necessary tools she's needed. He doesn't just say "play higher" or "do it again". Instead he tells her exactly HOW she can get better and exactly WHAT techniques she needs to do to improve. I have seen a noticeable difference in 8 lessons and look forward her future success with Olivier.+ Read More
My son enjoyed his lesson and is excited about improving his skills. He felt comfortable with Oliver.
Our son has been taking Horn lessons from Mr. Olivier for a year and a half (our son has only been playing horn for that amount of time) and loves it. Olivier doesn't just teach notes, he always takes care to foster musicality in our son. He has supported and helped our son prepare for All-Districts and Youth Symphony auditions where our son has secured first chair in both. We truly believe our son would not be this successful without Mr. Olivier's guidance. If you are interested in growing musically while mastering this beautiful instrument, he is the teacher for you! Always finding new pieces, and warm-up exercises to keep our son excited! Thank you Mr. Olivier+ Read More
He was very patient with me when I didn't know something and always pointed out my improvement. Great teacher!
My daughter is enjoying her lessons with Olivier.
Olivier is a great teacher! He helped me build confidence and tailors the lessons to your needs. He is easy to communicate with and exceeds expectations.
Mr. Olivier was very professional and well prepared. He gave my son great advice and took time to make sure he was comfortable. Very Knowledgeable.
My son is extremely happy with his first lesson with Olivier! Looking forward to many more! Thank you!
Fantastic instructor. There are not sufficient superlatives to describe his musicianship, patience, dedication, commitment, and ability to share his enthusiasm for this wonderful instrument. I doubted the efficacy of online lessons, but was sold from the start, all due to Oliver! I cannot recommend him enough!+ Read More
Best class ever! Even better than class face to face. Olivier made the connection with 13 years old. We are very lucky to find him.
