    About Nicholas L.

I'm a composer, performer, and electronic musician with degrees from Westminster Choir College (BM '10), Cleveland Institute of Music (MM '14), and Indiana University (DM, ABD) with minors in Music Theory and Electronic Music. I regularly write for both vocal and instrumental ensembles, and perform as a vocalist and electronic musician in a variety of genres and collaborations. I have taught composition at the university level (Indiana University), and I'm currently also on the faculty of Cleveland Institute of Music's Young Composer Program, teaching high school and early college students in the Summer. My individual areas of interest and teaching specialties include: vocal music, notation, instrumentation and orchestration, electronic and computer music, counterpoint, music history, and advanced music theory. I've taught all of these subjects on multiple occasions, and have also been employed as a professional engraver (so I can help you attain professional looking scores!) My works have been commissioned and performed by loadbang (NYC), Musica Nova Orchestra (Phoenix, AZ), North Coast Winds (Cleveland, OH), and the historic Tenth Presbyterian Church (Philadelphia, PA). Recent performances and honors include the Dean’s Prize in Orchestral Composition from Indiana University, First Prize in the 2017 Kuttner Quartet Competition, selection as composition fellow at the 2017 Red Note Music Festival, performances at the Society of Composers Inc. National Student Conference, and with the Indiana University New Music Ensemble and Indiana University Orchestra. Though the majority of my training is in contemporary and classical idioms, my students have won Down Beat Magazine awards for jazz composition, and I grew up playing in bands and writing both electronic and acoustic pop music. I believe that training in music composition can be used in a large variety of mediums if done with the craft and care that I put into my students. My goal with every student is to find their voice, and find a way to make the prolific with that individual style.
