Learn to sing what you want to sing with a classically trained tenor!

Ever heard your favorite Broadway singers be unable to sing the song you know them best for? There's a fear something like that might happen to everyone, an overuse and abuse of one's individual voice. With the proper training, practice of this skill, and awareness, it's possible to sing like the best for longer than the rest. There are so many things out there to sing, and there are manageable ways to sing all of your favorites in a healthy, sustainable way! Come study with me, and you can sing pop, classical, jazz, rock, musical theatre, or whatever else you want to work on. We'll approach the song from a point of breath understanding, making sure we are sharing the same vocabulary, before exploring the sounds you can make, how you make them, and how they become the sound waves that please so many of our ears. Along with six years of voice performance training from the Jacobs School of Music, I also studied musical theatre for two years under George Pinney, Liza Gennaro, Ray Fellman, and Terry LaBolt. I will be able to provide an approach to your voice that is from both a scientific, acoustic point, and a dramatic, acting point. You can not only become a better singer, but a better performer and artist. I'm really looking forward to meeting you and learning about your voice and where you want to take it!

    About Nathan K.

I have dedicated the last 8 years to completing my bachelors and masters degree in vocal performance at the Jacobs School of Music, one of the top music schools in the world. This education was perhaps one of the most trying things I will ever do, and I am remarkably happy to be able to share the experience and education I gained, and at a much cheaper price than the cost of admission! In addition to vocal training, I am highly experienced in stage performance from straight theatre to musical theatre to opera theatre, as well as an intermediate understanding of body movement (tai chi). If you are looking to enhance your artistic abilities, I will happily work you through techniques of acting from Uta Hagen, techniques of singing from Jane Dutton and Margaret Harshaw, and stage presence and performance practices, coaching and refining skills you already have, and introducing you to new ones as your skill book expands. When I'm not singing, I'm sleeping or eating, but honestly I sing as frequently as I can, as that is one of the simplest, most communicable forms of self-expression available, aside from perhaps dance, which I also do! Primarily when no one is looking. While singing is one of my foremost activities, outside of music I also loves video games, Avatar the Last Airbender, and the calmer outdoor activities. For those uninitiated: Singing is a physical act! It is just as engaging and muscle-demanding as football players and ballerinas. We will be stretching and strongly encouraging yoga throughout the lessons. Additionally we will learn how to maintain a connection to ones body, as that is integral to understanding and connecting more fully to ones voice. Stay hydrated and fueled and welcome to the beginning of initiation! *No hazing or negative experience is tolerated in Nathan's studio. Please come ready to share yourself and communicate your thoughts and feelings*

Nathan has a hands-on approach that could help you improve in minutes. Every exercise he had me do, he was able to make adjustments that would instantly help me, and he would help me form habits that would long-term improve my singing. We focused on perfecting the technique and also recognizing the triggers mentally (relaxation, pressure, visualizations) and physically (posture, breath work, physical sensations throughout the body). He's truly one of the best hands-on coaches you can choose to coach you, and he will make the most out of your lesson. Thank you Nathan!

I have been singing for many years, both in the music theatre genre as well as opera. I had been struggling mightily with a vocal issue that simply had me baffled. I was going to go get scoped for fear there may have been a physical problem, perhaps nodes, however, I was led to address it with several teachers before taking such drastic and expensive measures. I am very happy to say that Nathan was a big part of my journey in getting over this problem in a very short time. I had gotten offtrack with my breathing and my vocal space, and some tongue issues, and I am SO grateful for the expert help from this young pedagogue that really sent me on my way, and there was no need for anything more drastic. What a HUGE relief! It was simply a matter of reorganization of what I already knew how to do, but had fallen away from, and needed some expert guidance. I am beyond grateful to Nathan for his loving approach and encouragement. This guy knows his stuff!!!

As an experienced teacher and performer myself, I was open to learn what a young teacher in the profession could offer. Knowing Nathan just received his MM in Opera Performance from one of the most prestigious institutions, the Jacobs School of Music, I was eager to see what new insights he would bring to the table. He is VERY knowledgeable about what it takes to produce a healthy sound: proper breath support, the placement of our articulators, helping with resonance, and the overall space that is necessary to sustain vocal longevity. I personally gained some new perspectives from his approach. As singers, we always need a check-up because our bodies are our instrument, and they change. As a singer and teacher myself, I don't claim to know everything, we are always learning, and I am truly grateful for the tune-up from this highly accomplished young artist. Plus, he is an absolute JOY to work with. He cares deeply about his students. I have no doubt that Nathan is a wonderful asset to the profession of vocal pedagogy, as well as to the performance arena, and will be a name that will be remembered as the years go by. He is knowledgeable about different genres as well, not just the classical space. I highly recommend Nathan as a teacher!
