I have a Master of Music (M.M.) from the University of Oregon in Jazz Performance (Guitar), as well as two years of experience in the Berklee College of Music Acoustic String Department (Mandolin performance). I have performed internationally, but have spent my energy for the last few years mainly in developing a highly effective curriculum for folk stringed instruments. Unlike piano and violin, which have hundreds and hundreds of years of history and have been taught effectively all over the world, guitar, mandolin and banjo are relatively new instruments! I have developed a curriculum which uses what I consider to be the best aspects of formal/university music education, without sacrificing the joy of the informal/social method of learning which has been a characteristic of folk education throughout American history! My goal is to help students develop the technical skills they need to play music a very high level, while still maintaining the joy of creativity.
