I love music theory. I once read a comment on an online discussion board, in which someone basically said that music theory is to music what grammar is to English. I totally agree. It is one thing to know how to read and play music and it is another to have a more in depth understanding of the rules of written music. Music theory helps you to know why certain sounds sound the way they do and how to produce them. If you're an aspiring composer, music theory is definitely for you! If you sing in a choir or play in an orchestra, music theory is for you too! It will enhance your ability to read musical scores with greater ease and greater speed. If you're a dedicated, determined student who wants to enhance your ability to read and/or create music, I welcome you to book a lesson with me. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Teaching Materials Julie McIntosh Johnson's "Basics of Keyboard Theory" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Class Structure I will assign students 1-2 music theory lessons per week (depending on how much each student can handle at once) per week and will grade the lessons during our weekly sessions together. I may sometimes also utilize helpful YouTube videos and flashcards, if I see that it might be helpful to do so.
About Naomi O.

I have been playing the piano for 14 years. I love musical composition and have written ~40 + Christian songs. Since I love musical composition, naturally I also love music theory-something that has helped me to expand my "musical toolkit" of ideas. I am able to compose in several genres. Most of my music would probably fall most closely under the "Folk" label, but I have also written some pieces that are more classical in sound. I have considered writing some music in the country and southern gospel genres as well. All of the music I compose is Christian music (except for when I create strictly instrumental compositions). I read music pretty fluidly and I love studying written music. I think that music is so orderly, dependable, versatile and fascinating. I have personally found that music theory has helped me to read music faster and with greater ease. It has also enhanced my ability to make my compositions more complex and interesting. If you are a dedicated and determined student, and if I seem like a good fit for you, I welcome you to book a lesson with me. :)

I have really enjoyed taking piano playing lessons with Naomi. Working with her, I am learning to practice and play from written music and even surprising myself along the way. Still, I feel the best is to come!

I started working with Naomi just a few months ago and I already feel that she is one of the most inspiring teachers that I have ever had. She has a real joy for music and is an enthusiastic instructor. She has really taken the time to 'go into the weeds' with me and patiently answers all of my questions about music theory. I had tried other teachers in the past, but Naomi is careful to keep the content in step with my learning pace. I have really appreciated her instruction.
