I have been playing the flute since 3rd grade and have loved it ever sense. I recently graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Flute Performance, while studying under Prof. Julianna Nickel. I was a member of the George Mason Wind Symphony and George Mason’s Symphony Orchestra in my senior year. I performed in George Mason’s Honors Recital in 2012 and 2013. I had the opportunity to perform with the AFPO in 2013 and 2015. I was selected as a soloist for The Young Masters Concert concerto competition in 2014 and performed with the GMU Orchestra. This past spring I had an internship with the Education Institute at the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. I have been teaching privately since my senior year of high school and love working with students of any age, especially beginners! I started building my studio throughout my years at George Mason University and look forward to continuing to teach students who share my love of music!

My daughter is 9 and a bit shy - played piano but never flute. Melissa jumped right in on our first lesson, went through the basics, and while doing so assessed her abilities (like ability to read music). Before she left, my daughter was playing some basic notes using the form Melissa taught her. As I write this, she is already practicing on her own after left with some challenging but fun practice. Only the first class, but a great "gut feeling". My wife and I both enjoyed Melissa's kind personality but most importantly our daughter enjoys her. We're optimistic for a great learning experience.

Melissa Thompson has been a colleague of mine for 4+ years now and is an amazing musician! I have had the opportunity to watch her teach countless times and would recommend her to anyone. She is clear, concise, and fun in her lessons and you can definitely hear an improvement right away.
