Melissa is an Orlando native and graduated from the Orange County Public School system. Since joining the staff at a local Fine Arts Magnet public school in 2005, she has written a Music Theory and Composition curriculum, started Piano and Guitar programs, expanded the Band program, and was recognized as teacher of the year. Melissa is a graduate of the University of Central Florida, where she earned two music scholarships and earned a Bachelor degree in Music Education. She also holds a Music K-12 Certification from the Florida Department of Education. Not only is Melissa a dedicated music educator, she also performs regularly with the Southern Winds and Orlando Concert Bands, in addition to other freelance venues. She is also an active member of the Florida Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, and Florida Flute Association. Her students have gone on to study music in college and have been represented in All-State, All-County, Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, Florida Young Artists Orchestra, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts, as well as earn Superior ratings at District and State Solo and Ensemble events. *** Lesson Details *** I believe that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the styles of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic technique through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible. *** Studio Equipment *** I own a piano, flute. Students will provide their own instrument. *** Specialties *** I teach beginning, intermediate, and advance literature on the flute. For beginners, I typically support the student's band program (if enrolled) by utilizing their class method book and supplying additional materials, such as solos, duets, etc. For experienced students, I use a combination of etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies - Cavally, 26 Selected Studies - Altes, etc.), Duets, solos, and audition materials based on student interest. I specialize in teaching all genres and styles of music.
