About Melissa G.
Hi, I'm Melissa!
From performing, traveling, and teaching in my home studio, my life is built around the flute. Currently, I perform multiple times a month with small ensembles, as well as a soloist. My credentials range from solo, flute and piano, small ensembles, orchestras, and more.
In addition to performing and teaching, I am the CEO/Artistic Director of Seven Pillars 501c3 nonprofit whose vision is to provide cross-cultural events for musicians, with the aim of illuminating the artistic soul so each artist can pass on the light to others in their communities. Events range from the Interactive Flute Retreat in South Haven Michigan, to masterclasses and performances in Jamaica this year!
As a teaching artist, I enjoy watching students grow musically and see their musical potential come to life. I have been teaching since high school and thoroughly enjoy one on one lessons. I was honored to have a teacher from day one of flute when I was seven years old and love passing on the knowledge taught to me (and continue to learn) throughout my career. Currently, students in my studio range from 6 years to 75. It doesn't matter what age you are, all students are encouraged to keep their initial curiosity in every stage of playing because patience, curiosity, frequent practice (and even a positive attitude) are key to success at whatever level you are at.
Student levels include, beginner, adult, intermediate and advanced.
Intermediate- Advanced students tend to have goals such as sitting first chair, upcoming auditions, and even competitions and college auditions. They may want to play concertos, orchestral excerpts, and Donjon etudes.
Adult students (14+) may prefer to enjoy the flute with the goal to learn their favorite Disney songs, popular tunes, and even Blackbird. Students at this level prefer to play the flute for fun. I love to teach these students how to play their favorite piece while learning flute fundamentals that will expand to other pieces, especially classical, along the way.
Young beginners work on the fundamentals through book recommendations, downloadable projects, and band music. Incorporating new material to facilitate growth at their own level will ensure smiles during band when they realize they have already mastered new material with private lessons. The point is to enjoy band and now they can with confidence.
I look forward to working with you!
