Learn the viola in no time from an experienced musician and teacher

It is my goal as a teacher to "decode" each individual student's personal learning style. I strive to create a fun and safe learning environment and to instill the values of lifelong learning, curiosity, and self-improvement in my students. My primary goal as a teacher is to make playing the viola easy and fun. My teaching begins with a strong technical foundation. Having strong basics allows the violist to play their instrument with ease, having the freedom to play musically and creatively. I provide students with a balance of scales and arpeggios, etudes and technical exercises, and classic repertoire, and supplement with fiddle, pop, and jazz tunes, according to the student's interests. I firmly believe that students can begin learning a musical instrument at any age. While I love working with children, I have developed a specialty in teaching adult beginners. The majority of my students are adult learners between ages 25-65 who are either learning an instrument for the very first time or have had previous experience playing other instruments as children, including the piano, trumpet, and saxophone. I have developed a specialized progression for training adults which develops good habits, solid technique, and beautiful sound on the viola.

Hi there! I am Megan. I have been teaching violin and viola privately for over 12 years, both in-person and online. I have been a TakeLessons instructor for approximately the last 5 years. In addition to my private studio, I am also a violin, viola, and group class instructor for Kalamazoo Kids in Tune, an innovative free after-school youth development program serving students in grades 3-12. To tell you a little bit about my training, I recently earned my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Violin Performance at the University of Colorado Boulder. My doctoral research focused on teaching adult beginners. While at CU, I served as the Graduate Teaching Assistant to Károly Schranz and Harumi Rhodes, the former and current second violinists in the world-renowned Takács quartet. In addition to assisting with administrative tasks, I met with undergraduate and graduate students for weekly private lessons to assist with their technical and musical development. We covered scales, arpeggios, doublestops, etudes, technical exercises, and repertoire. I also hold Master of Music and Artist Diploma degrees from Western Michigan University, where I served as the graduate teaching assistant to Professor Renata Artman Knific and studied viola with Professor Igor Fedotov. During my time at Western, I was the primary instructor for undergraduate Music Education, Music Therapy, and Music Composition majors' private violin lessons. I completed my Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance at the University of Iowa, where I studied violin with Dr. Scott Conklin and viola with Dr. Megan Gray. I have performed with several symphony orchestras, including the Kalamazoo Symphony, Grand Rapids Opera, South Bend Symphony, West Michigan Symphony, Southwest Michigan Symphony, Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic, Boulder Chamber Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony, Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, Cheyenne (WY) Symphony Orchestra, Steamboat Springs Symphony Orchestra, Holland (MI) Symphony, and the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Recently, I appeared as soloist with the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, my former youth orchestra. I also manage a wedding and event music business called the KalHaven Strings. As a teacher, my goal is to give students the tools to make playing their instrument easy and fun. My teaching style is friendly, casual, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and full of positive reinforcement. I also believe in giving students the tools to make their daily practice sessions as rewarding and productive as their weekly lessons, and provide lesson notes, handouts, and videos to aid student practice. I teach online and in-person out of my home studio in the Westwood neighborhood of Kalamazoo, MI. Please do not hesitate to be in touch with any questions that you may have! I am happy to help.

She has been amazing, I tried learning on my own at first without much success. Having her show me the fundamentals and help me identify the bad habbits before they took root has been extremely helpful. She is really gifted as a teacher I highly recommend her.

From my experience with her, she is very knowledgeable, has a great sense of humor, knows about computers and I enjoy learning from her. I only hope that I can keep doing the violin lessons until I'm playing the violin well enough to be able to make some music.

    Violin and Viola Instructor

    Oct, 2020 - Present

    Kalamazoo Kids in Tune

Kalamazoo Kids in Tune, a partnership between the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Kalamazoo Public Schools, is an innovative after-school orchestra and youth development program. Students from early elementary through high school study instruments and chamber music, and participate in daily lessons and orchestra rehearsals. Selected middle and high school students return to the elementary program as KKIT Young Leaders twice per week to mentor younger children. After-school meals and busing make the program widely accessible. Our mission: children will achieve their full potential through sustained, intense engagement in orchestral music. Kids In Tune was inspired in part by the El Sistema movement. As part of the Kids in Tune team, I private weekly private violin and viola lessons to students in grades 3-12. I also teach string sectionals and group classes.
