    Ever pondered upon a visceral reaction that you had in response to listening and/or playing a striking sonority or melodic passage of music? Do you wish to gain insight into the ingredients that form the basis of your emotional connection to musical sound? Are you seeking to elevate your musicianship to further enhance your work as a performer? Or do you simply wish to acquire fundamental knowledge to help prepare for required testing? Regardless of objective, I seek to empower you with the cornerstones of music that can lead and hopefully motivate you to further pursue any of your musical goals. As a professional vocalist who is passionate about the science of both singing and music, I aim to disseminate an outlook on the theory of music not as a purely artificial system of random, pedantic rules and formulas but rather as an ingenious codification of scientific laws that speaks to the core of our innermost selves. Moreover, having a penchant for musicology and the history of music, I strive to place the theoretical materials that I teach both within their historical and cultural contexts, with the hope of further enriching the student's fascination with the opulence of the musical material. I hold a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Boston University. I draw my knowledge of Music Theory from multiple graduate level theory, musicianship, and musicology courses that I studied during my time at that institution. Moreover, I currently perform and teach both voice and piano professionally. I frequently employ my study of ear training with the former and use my comprehension of music theory in particular with the latter in order to guide those students in the learning of this fundamental instrument. The topics that I can cover with you range from the rudimentary basics of notation to chromatic chord progressions and even some post-tonal procedures. The following list includes a selection of specific topics that I can cover: elements of pitch and the harmonic series, elements of meter and rhythm, major and minor key signatures, diatonic triads and seventh chords, species counterpoint, tonal chord progressions of the basic phrase in two and four part voice-leading, embellishing tones, secondary dominants and other "borrowed" chords (e.g. mode mixture, Neapolitan sixth, augmented sixth) , key modulation, large-scale musical forms (e.g. sonata form, chromatic harmony, and some atonal styles (e.g. modes, sets, and twelve-tone rows) I look forward to working with you

    I have had a lifelong fondness for music, science, and the aesthetic expression of emotion through sound. My Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Boston University serves as a hallmark of my enduring performance background in opera, art song, chamber music, church services, choral repertoire, and musical theatre. Recently, I have also increasingly discovered the brilliant educational tools that contemporary voice science has to offer the human instrument. My resultant engagements with vocal pedagogy in graduate school, through independent study, and at professional events – including the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Summer Conference and the Boston Conservatory Vocal Pedagogy Workshop (where I received a Certificate of Distinction in Vocal Pedagogy) – has garnered a developing comprehension not only over the relevant anatomy, physiology, and acoustics of the voice but also of the psychology of singing and the essential ingredients for mastery of complex motor learning. My additional experience with the Alexander Technique as well as some Yoga further helps supplement my practical understanding over the basic neuromuscular and musculoskeletal functions of the human body. I have had the fortune of putting all my learning into pedagogic practice by providing critical analysis and constructive feedback for student singers both in group studio classes as well as in the teacher’s studio throughout many years of my singing career. These experiences have cumulatively helped me identify and rectify errors in my own singing, enriched my performing and, thus, augmented my ability to empathize with colleagues and with the needs of aspiring singers. I am dedicated to helping each individual find this same vocal independence, which will allow their technique, self-confidence, and unique artistry to blossom. I strive accordingly to draw on these various facets of knowledge and direct personal experiences in my teaching. Amalgamating music and science as reinforcing rather than disparate arenas of knowledge, it will invite the student to explore a holistic package of practices spanning vocalism itself to its underscoring foundations: from basic Alexander Technique to vocal athleticism to bodymapping to diction (using the acclaimed IPA) to some fundamental music theory and ear training. The ultimate purpose is to directly benefit you and your particular ambitions as an enthusiastic singer. I very much look forward to working with you.

    I took a few lessons with Max to try out learning singing. Even at the first lesson, I was surprised by how prepared and meticulous Max is. He has all the foundational notes prepared, went through them with me one by one, and answering all my questions along the way. What's more is that Max also goes through all the scientific backing of the knowledge and the practices. I would recommend Max to anyone who wants to start learning to sing with a strong foundation.

    I just finished my last lesson today with Max. I really enjoyed my time and had foundational skills built over the past few months. I became much more aware of myself, my posture, and my voice. I developed a much better vibrato and really built my confidence along the way. As a speech therapist, I truly appreciate the strong scientific knowledge that Max provides, which really makes singing more tangible and accessible to everyone!     I started taking lessons with Max a few months ago to learn foundational techniques, as I was a complete beginner with no prior singing experience. I thoroughly enjoyed Max’s unique scientific approach to teaching! The body mapping and awareness techniques he taught me have helped me not only in singing, but in all areas of my life.
