I've been teaching sitar since 2013 and my students have gone on to develop a love for Indian classical music and culture. Within the first few lessons, you'll be properly holding the sitar and playing notes and phrases. Then, we take particular ragas and begin layering in raga and tala theory and more advanced techniques. My greatest joy is taking a student who started with no musical experience and getting them to the point of successfully performing on stage with tabla accompaniment.
I have a roster of long term students I both travel to, teach in my home studio, and teach online.
I teach sitar and I provide additional tutoring for students of the Academy who need help improving their tala by accompanying them on tabla.
He's a great teacher!
My daughter really enjoyed the lessons
Matt is a joy to have as an instructor. He’s very experienced and knowledgeable in not just the sitar itself, but how best to teach it. He figures where you are at, what you need, and helps you to set realistic goals for yourself. I would highly recommend him as an instructor! Additionally, I really appreciated his flexibility and willingness to help me continue my lessons when I lost my job which necessitated a move across the country and he was willing to try online courses. I think you definitely need an in-person foundation but the online classes have been really great and I’m so glad we could continue our lessons!+ Read More
Matt is a terrific teacher and a wonderful human being
I've been taking lessons for over a year and have progressed significantly. Mathew is patient, supportive, and flexible. I had no prior experience with Indian Classical Music or stringed instruments. Mathew strikes a great balance - supporting traditional techniques, principles, and terminology while making sure I'm not overwhelmed. And, he also has a knack for figuring out just how much to challenge me to ensure that I'm constantly improving without getting in over my head.+ Read More
