I start from scratch with every student, and create a plan based on their goals, experience, and preferred music styles. No two students have the same lesson.

Additionally, because the jazz school I attended gave students very strong instruction in harmony and ear-training, I teach students not just how to read notes, but to understand what they're playing so they can be more creative and versatile. Moreover, I encourage students to feel comfortable making mistakes in a safe environment so they can step outside of their comfort zone.

About Marshal Y.

Drawing on my diverse background, I tutor students in Music and Chess (beginning-intermediate), Math (K-8), and Language Arts (reading and writing: K-12). I am Yale-educated with specialized training from the Grove School of Music in Jazz Piano, Harmony, and songwriting. I am also a certified Kaplan instructor in Math and English.

My teaching style is relaxed and democratic. Instead of giving students answers, I help them discover the right answers (or notes) on their own, by asking questions. This helps them better understand the concepts, while improving their self-confidence and ability to learn and think independently. To this end, I also spontaneously create exercises and, for Music students, songs that focus on areas that challenge them. My playful humor enables students to feel comfortable making mistakes so they can reach beyond their comfort zone.

Depending on students' interests, piano lessons may include note-reading, technique and harmony; improvisation; ear-training; and songwriting. Through this training, my students understand what they're playing and are able to interpret music.

Chess lessons for beginning players may cover rules, openings (including analysis of moves within them); and, for intermediate players, middle and endgame strategies.

I also tutor students in academics. For Math students, lessons can incorporate modeling, real-life examples, educational games, apps, and a touch of humor to make learning EXCITING. I have also partnered with a retired English and Math teacher who designs games that help children grasp Math concepts.

Language Arts lessons might include grammar, reading, comprehension, pronunciation, writing, and vocabulary. I also show students how to build their vocabulary by journaling interesting phrases they come across and reviewing word lists I used while preparing for the SAT.

I recently took an intro to piano class from Marshal via Zoom. He e-mailed the course .pdf materials promptly after booking so that I could visually go over the lesson ahead of time. He had an easy going manner about himself and was okay with me interrupting on several occasions to ask a question or tell him I already knew the material being taught. Definitely recommended for beginners and children!
