About Maia S.
I’m a classical singer and senior undergraduate in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music working towards a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in vocal performance, specifically opera.
It’s my belief that everyone can be a singer, given the right training. Because a singer is their own instrument, I teach students how to sing freely, safely, and healthily while engaging their whole being. My strongest value in singing is releasing tensions in the body. The voice is unique because it is a part of living, breathing humans, and my students will learn how to preserve and grow their own special, individual sound.
Positive affirmation, constructive feedback, and attention to detail are my pillars of teaching. My teaching approach and experience are best suited to beginning/intermediate students ages 9-18 who have a desire to learn classical voice.
During my time as a voice major, I have had the opportunity to perform and study several different operas with Opera UCLA, including La descente d’Orphée aux enfers, Juana, Lost Childhood, and Mother of Us All. In the summer of 2021, I am currently scheduled to sing and cover leading roles at the Trentino Music Festival and with Chicago Summer Opera. Additionally, I’ve performed in UCLA Choirs every year as an undergrad, and I’m a Young Artist with the professional choral group Seraphic Fire’s Ensemble Artist Program.
I began taking voice lessons at age 9 and started studying opera and classical voice around age 13. I’ve also sung in choirs for eleven years. Once I started learning the repertoire, I started to appreciate the beauty and intensity of classical music, and after a while I knew I had to study it at the collegiate level. While classical is my specialty, I also absolutely LOVE musical theater, and I’d be delighted to teach aspiring musical theater singers! I believe that classical singing provides the foundation and skills to keep your voice healthy for all types of singing. I’m so looking forward to sharing my passion for creating beauty with the human voice with you.

Maia was very engaging and professional. She was patient, as I was learning from a beginner skill level, and encouraging me to push myself. She is a talented singer, evident in her technique, and did a good job of communicating the lesson.

Maia is an excellent teacher! She is very focused and organized and helped me feel grounded in my voice.

Good teachers are rare these days, but Maia is one-of-a-kind! As an older sister, she has the patience and understanding that is necessary to teach young students, but--with her education at the #1 Public University in the nation, UCLA--she's also equipped to teach at any level. I'd highly recommend Maia!
