MM in Viola Performance

Learn the viola with ease from a Professional Violist.

I teach students to discover and utilize tools they already have in order to take their playing to the next level. As a Juilliard-trained musician, I know how important it is to never lose sight of why we love music in the first place. This looks different for everyone, and I believe that music lessons are about finding what students can apply from other areas of their life that will enrich their musical experience. As a kid and an adult, I've found that feeling inspired is the best way to to stay motivated!

    About Lydia G.

I am a professional violist with the Minnesota Orchestra. I recently completed my Bachelor and Master of Music at The Juilliard School as a student of Misha Amory and Cynthia Phelps. I have been teaching for almost eight years now, and have experience with violinists and violists but can specifically be helpful to those switching from one to the other! When I switched to the viola later in life, I learned new techniques and habits to help produce the rich, beautiful sound of the viola that is so similar to the human voice. In fact, It was this aspect that initially drew me to the instrument. As a teacher, my focus begins with building a strong foundation that is constantly improved upon over time, as opposed to learning lots of material very quickly. Every student is different, so I try to approach every lesson with an open mind. I firmly believe that taking inspiration from one's own experiences can inform artistic choices. I am open to teaching students of any age, skill level, or seriousness level, and can travel for lessons if necessary. Music is for everywhere, so I will meet you wherever you or your child are at!
