Violin lessons for children and adults

Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweig’s principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting. For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Typically every lesson will include technique (posture, scales, sound production, vibrato, etudes, etc) and musicality (choosing the right pieces so students remain motivated but challenged).

I was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, and started playing the viola at the age of 5. When I was 19 I moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where I attained a Bachelor of Music with Honours. Following my Bachelors degree, I completed a Master of Performance at the Royal College of Music and was awarded this in 2014. I started teaching privately in 2010 and help students of all ages prepare for their exams (grades 1 to 8), auditions and other performances. I create tailored lesson plans for each student and teach both the performance and theory aspects in preparation for the exams. Most of my students are long-term students and have been learning with me for 3-4 years, with some up to 6 years. I take great pride in their success and my students have had a 100% success rate in the ABRSM exams. In addition to teaching privately, I have also taught in various primary schools in the London Borough of Newham, teaching violin to students in years 5 and 6 (4th and 5th Grade) to take steps 1, 2 and grade 1 in the ECAM programme with the London College of Music and the University of West London. This involved designing lessons to ensure students were ready to take the final exams by end of term and varying teaching methods to ensure all learning styles were accommodated. I have performed in New York City, London and France (including at the Merkin Concert Hall, LaMama Theatre, BBC Proms, the Barbican Centre and the Palace of Versailles) I was also invited to take part in the Philharmonia Orchestra ‘Infernal Dance’ chamber music series and was finalist in the Max and Peggy Morgan Competition run by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Other courses and qualifications that I have completed include: ‘Teaching the Violin and Viola: Creating a healthy foundation’ at Northwestern University, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant certification and a Child Protection Awareness programme.

Lydia is an excellent violin teacher. She has a very gentle, patient demeanor which is so important when working with kids. My daughter started lessons just after turning 5, and though her focus was not always there, Lydia always found ways to keep her learning and engaged. 6 months later, my daughter is much more focused and already playing songs and starting to read music. I think it's important to note that Lydia is very organized, always on time, professional, and pleasant to work with. Very highly recommend!

    Bilingual Beats

At Bilingual Beats, I used music to teach children to move rhythmically, to sing, and to develop listening and improvisational skills, acquiring at the same time new vocabulary and grammatical structures of a second language (Spanish) in a very enjoyable way. I was trained to develop fun and creative activities with live music, making it a unique learning experience.
