Tenor Lázaro Calderón, has rapidly established his presence in the operatic and concert world. His prestigous Carnegie Hall debut in Haydn's "Mass in the Time of War" and his Lincoln Center debut of the "Mozart Requiem" at Avery Fisher Hall were both met with great success and marked the beggining of his career. Calderón won the prize for Best Italian Aria at the Puerto Rico District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2010, he was a finalist at the annual NYLOT competition. Calderón’s repertory includes Duca di Mantua (Rigoletto), Des Grieux (Manon), Rodolfo (La Bohème), Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) Romeo (Romeo et Juliette), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Don Jose (Carmen), Tebaldo (I Capuleti e I Montecchi), Steuermann (Der Fliegende Holländer), as well as Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly). Other roles in his repertoire include Ruggero in “La Rondine” which he performed at Sarasota Opera, and the role of Don Luis de Haro in the Zarzuela “El Barberillo de Lavapies” which he premiered in Puerto Rico. The art of the zarzuela is a passion Mr. Calderón dedicates himself to regularly in concerts, winning the hearts of audiences in his home country and abroad. In 2012, Lázaro Calderón earned great accolades after his debut in San Jose, California, with Opera Bravura. He also earned rave reviews for the role of Riccardo Percy in “Anna Bolena” with Opera in the Heights in Houston. One critic wrote: “…one of the purest, most brilliant tenor voices working today.”(The Houston Chronicle, January 2012). After his “Il Trovatore” debut as Manrico (March 2012), the Houston Press thought: “His Act III pièce de résistance, the stirring "Di quella pira" rang through Lambert Hall like the most radiant claxon call. Throughout his career Mr. Calderón has worked with renowned directors and singers such as Marcello Giordani, Tito Capobianco, Anthony Laciura and Michael Scarola. He has collaborated with conductors Steven Crawford, Victor DeRenzi, Enrique Patron de Rueda and Willie Anthony Waters. Mr. Calderón shared the Carnegie Hall stage with tenor, Jonas Kaufmann, and soprano, Angela Gheorghiu in a production of Adriana Lecouvreur.
