About Kim A.
Hi there! I started singing at the age of 5 and haven't stopped since. Throughout the years I have been involved in choirs (both amateur and collegiate levels), worship teams, a touring music group in college and various other music groups/bands along the way. In 2006 I graduated with a B.A. in Music(voice)/Liberal Arts from Simpson University where I was trained Classically with work in Opera and musical theater. Since then I have utilized my degree as an assistant musical instructor for various summer programs and teaching musical theater arts for an After School Program. Over the years I have also worked in the arts with Shasta College, Simpson University, The Dance Project, as a Company Member for Westside Performing Arts Company and teaching privately for the past 3 years. My preference and general experience has been teaching youth and beginner/intermediate level voices. Currently, I am teaching private vocal lessons and performing professionally wherever I can because this is the passion within me and I have so much fun doing it!
*** Lesson Details ***
I find that having a good study/work ethic and practicing repetition are very foundational in the learning process to gain muscle memory and growth. However, in the same respect, I firmly believe that there must be a healthy level of fun and excitement involved in the process to keep motivation and interest. Both ends of the spectrum are essential to complete a positive and productive experience throughout your lessons! I truly believe that no matter what style of music you choose to sing, you should have classical style foundations if technique. Thus, I study Classical technique training with all of my students and work in some Classical and Art songs into their repertoire to help them progress. Otherwise, I tend to assign Musical Theater style songs.
As for curriculum, there are a few different books available for different voice types/levels and may be assigned after the first voice lesson. It is always important to recommend the appropriate curriculum only after the student's musical level and voice type have been determined.
My hope for all of my students (young and old) is that with time they will feel more confident, secure, stretched, knowledgable and determined in their art form.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room area with fully weighted 88 key Casio keyboard, chairs and music stand. No waiting area for parents but they can sit in on lessons.
*** Specialties ***
I prefer teaching a classical based vocal technique and musical theater/art songs. I also teach some classic pieces as well to reinforce classical training.
