About Kelly A.
After years of teaching all levels, and many different styles of voice and piano lessons, I can tell you this-- I LOVE teaching! My students have ranged from 5 to over 65, from classical piano, or jazz/pop piano, to pop/rock/jazz singing, to songwriting and/or ear-training, and no matter what we always have a great time. I guarantee that in our lessons, you will see progress almost immediately... but above all, learning music is FUN! A little extra info....
**In 2012 I finished a Masters degree at NYU in Jazz Studies, and recorded an album of some jazz, folk, and original music.
**I perform in New York City and Seattle, and I tour with my band a few times each year
**In 2019 I wrote some new original songs and collaborated with a producer (Andrew Vait - SISTERS, Little Wins) and will be releasing some fun, brand new music in the summer 2019 (electro/synth-based funky pop music with a hint of nostalgia)
**I taught jazz piano and voice lessons for four years at NYU and also through the New York Jazz Academy and Brooklyn Music Factory, from beginning to advanced, classical, pop or jazz -- and I teach rock bands how to learn music by ear and have fun playing with other people! I have also been teaching privately (independent home studio) since 2007.
**I organize and teach vocal workshop classes, where singers can learn how to work with a band.
**I also organize and teach songwriting classes, where you can learn how to get into writing songs and performing or recording your own music, either as a solo artist, or with a band!
**I joined the Cornish College of the Arts adjunct jazz faculty in Spring 2015! I teach private lessons in voice, piano, and songwriting, Piano classes (Piano I, II, III, IV), The Art of Songwriting class, Vocal Standards Class, Ear Training I & II, and in the past I also taught a vocal anatomy/production/professionalism class called VOX: MIND/BODY. I also put together showcases each semester for my private students to perform their music at local clubs/venues in downtown Seattle.
I moved back to Seattle in April 2014 after being in NYC for four years -- completing my Master of Music degree (NYU), living, teaching, and performing in Brooklyn and Manhattan. NYC was amazing, and I'd love to share with you all of the cool things I picked up during my time there. From 2005-2010, I lived in Seattle and taught music lessons. I graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in Jazz Performance (voice) and performed a lot around Seattle-- from jazz clubs to concert halls-- performing pop, rock, soul, jazz and even working in a Steely Dan Tribute Band!! (your parents might appreciate that more than you do). I actually still perform actively with the Steely Dan tribute band (Nearly Dan), and we perform at some of the premier venues in Seattle, such as Jazz Alley and the Triple Door.
More than anything, I'm fascinated by the different ways that students learn and always love figuring out what kind of learning works best for YOU.
*** Lesson Details ***
I love watching my students progress and enjoy their music, no matter what style they enjoy or what level they are. I work with students to pick out music that they'll enjoy working on-- it's always more fun to learn songs you love!
I'm a pretty laid back teacher, but I work to inspire my students to try their hardest and do the best that they can do. I will provide you will the exercises, materials, and right level of songs to help you meet your goals, and together we can create a plan for our lessons.
In our lessons we will cover a variety of topics, including:
--Strong, Healthy TECHNIQUE so that you can gain a command of your instrument and play or sing whatever you choose. Through various EXERCISES you will develop strength, control, musicianship, and good habits.
It is important to develop a healthy technique so that you can sing whatever you want without getting fatigued or injuring your voice. We'll work on developing strong technique and finding your own unique SOUND-- we'll choose music that is right for your vocal style and music that YOU connect with so you can really express yourself.
No matter whether you want to play classical, pop, or jazz, you'll want your fingers to be strong and agile enough to get the sound that you want out of the instrument. With good technique you can play anything!
--Rhythm, subdivision, and groove
--Ear-training & Music Theory (chord qualities, pitch matching, easy transcription)
--Building your REPERTOIRE so that you have songs to play, and discussing techniques specific to each style of music you study
--Arranging or Communicating with a band (if that is something which interests you)
--Performance considerations.... developing confidence and personal expression!
My goal is to inspire students to play their instruments (or sing!), develop good habits and encourage healthy curiosity..... but most of all to LOVE playing music!
*** Studio Equipment ***
full music room with 88 f/w keyboard with music stand, amp, microphone (if applicable), acoustic guitar, seating for parents.
I will provide lesson plans and corresponding handouts, exercises, examples, etc. If the student is taking piano lessons they should have access to a keyboard or piano at home. I also have a vocal microphone & amp to work on microphone technique.
*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz/pop piano and voice, and have a strong background in classical and jazz theory and technique. I typically design curricula which include technical exercises from my classical background and then focus stylistically on the genre that the student is interested in. I have extensive experience both performing and teaching in many jazz, pop, rock and soul styles-- I try to help the student find their unique voice while establishing a strong foundation of healthy technique.
Teaches Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Teaching since 2007
Kelly is super friendly, encouraging and helpful. After a couple lessons I’ve already learned so much that I never learned while in choir or working with my previous voice coach. I’m really looking forward to continue working with her and excited to see what we can accomplish together.Show More
Supportive vibe, good skills, just right.
Kelly made the singing lesson easy, pleasant and practical. At the end of my first lesson, I already felt the improvement of my singing. She is awesome!
She is really kind. She has a great style of teaching, helping you singing on notes and correct lyrics. I had little confidence in myself at first but she helped me learn alot
Lovely instructor, patient and fun. I learnt a lot in my first lesson. Than kyou
I'm not being hyperbolic when I write that Kelly is one of the finest teachers I've ever had. I'm a singer-songwriter with unlimited drive, but frustratingly limited musical skills, and Kelly has been able to teach me theory and any number of other related skills such that I've made great progress. She is very patient, extremely musical, and has great taste, which sure doesn't hurt!Show More
Kelly was very patient with a pretty bad pianist haha
Knowledgeable, helpful and patient. She's also been very flexible in her approach to our 12-year-old. Recommended.
Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.
Kelly is an awesome teacher. She is thorough, patient, and has a great personality which is very important for a teacher to have. Kelly has presented her knowledge in a way that I can understand and apply. I've learned quite a bit in a very short time. I recommend her teaching skills for young and old.Show More
Kelly is the best voice/singing teacher I've had from takelessons! She's a true professional--prompt response for scheduling, on time/ready for my lessons when I arrive and she has a proper studio space (clean and organized)! But above all that, her education, experience, talent and heart makes her give you her very best to help you succeed in your goals--while doing it in a sincere, respectful and encouraging way. She has techniques, tips and advice geared specifically for my challenges, that are my go-to's for when I'm rehearsing/warming up and performing! Thanks, Kelly!Show More
Felt very comfortable at my first lesson! Also, Kelly was very knowledgeable and felt like I could apply my new skills right away. It's hard to come by a teacher like this.
Like her a lot.
She is good.
Amazing Instructor. I leant a lot in a single class and looking forward to lean more from her.
She has talent n great techniques coupled wid education n experience!
Kelly was super enthusiastic about what she was teaching and helped a lot. I learned up to 5 things in one lesson--her breathing exercises and warm-ups were really great.
would recommend!!! -Alex (9 years old)
As a beginner, I feel happy about what I have learned after 4 lessons with Kelly. I have made some progress and have the confidence that I will play well sometime soon.
I had a great time at my first lesson.
Amazing, relevant and able to relate to my 8 year old and immediately be someone she looks up to. Highly recommended!
Kelly was knowledgable and friendly. I was nervous for my first lesson but she put me at ease.
After meeting with Kelly and doing some voice exercises, I am certain that she can help me reach my goals. Kelly instils a healthy approach which will surely build confidence in any singer.
Thank You Kelly for your time.
We worked on technical exercises that focused on the intonation areas I wanted to improve. I have a lot to practice.
Kelly keeps my 12 daughter energized about song writing!
Kelly has been working with my 10 year old daughter. Kelly brings enthusiasm and knowledge to each lesson creating an atmosphere of fun and learning. She's great!
It was my first voice lesson with Kelly and the overall experience was a positive one. I look forward to working with her on a weekly basis.
Kelly is fantastic to work with! She obviously knows her stuff and has helped me break out of my comfort zone a bit in just the few lessons we've had. After years away from music, I'm glad to be getting back on track and am thrilled to have Kelly as my guide.Show More
Very enthusuastic and engaging; very current teaching methods
Kelly really knows her theory, inside and out. And she can explain how it all works. It's much easier to memorize a piece once you understand the theory behind it: the progression of the chords, and their functions. I wish my former teachers had known theory instead of making me memorize all those notes with no explanation.Show More
I have been studying jazz piano on my own for a while and started lessons with Kelly a few months ago. Her knowledge of chord theory and practical application has helped me to move along very quickly. She is also very supportive and a pleasure to study with. I highly recommend her as an instructor.Show More
When my family moved from Iceland earlier this year one of the first thing we did was searching for singing teacher for our 16 years old daughter an we could not have been luckier meeting Kelly. She welcomed our daughter and from first lesson my daughter has been improving her skills.
I can surely recommend her and am confident that anyone will become better musician learning from her!
Kelly is an amazing teacher, musician, and singer! She has great energy and a positive attitude. It's impossible not to smile when you're around her. I came to her to finally learn how to sing. In the first lesson she identified two bad singing habits that I've been doing for years. I've improved tremendously since then and I owe it all to her! Lately we've been working on music theory and song writing. I'm very happy with her as my teacher!Show More
It's been decades since I last took piano lessons, and Kelly has been great with working with and expanding my skills.
Kelly knows her stuff and is so easy and fun to work with. I couldn't imagine better.
Kelly is a wonderful teacher! She is extremely knowledgeable about music. She helped me raise my grades in my music theory classes. I learned so much about building my repertoire and using different techniques in order to sing songs in a unique way. I would absolutely recommend taking any kind of music lessons from Kelly because of her knowledge and her ability to communicate the concept. Anyone will become a better musician when learning from Kelly.Show More
We've only had 2 lessons so far, but I can say Kelly is a fantastic teacher. I've learned and grown as a singer already.
Kelly has a talent for teaching and playing music. She is able to convey complex musical ideas through the use of analogies. Kelly regularly emphases important aspects of singing. Her passion for music is clear, look no further for a great teacher.
Genuine, caring teacher with a high energy level
I look forward to my lessons with Kelly every week. Her enthusiasm for music and singing is contagious and I would highly recommend her. In fact I am recommending her to my friends. She shows a genuine interest in my success as a vocalist.
Kelly is awesome!
I can't sing enough praise for Kelly- she somehow manages to teach a combination of theory, anatomy, and the practical aspects of singing in each lesson. I look forward to every class and couldn't have asked for a better teacher. Even though I'm just a beginner, she is very encouraging and gives you the confidence to be great. I hope she never stops teaching!
