I believe this is a great time to be a musician. I have come of age as a musician in a time when music making and the music industry have shifted dramatically. There are many positives in this shift, with new oppurtinites opening up for musicians. I also see these changes not being addressed in music education. There are many things I wish I would've been taught when I was younger that would have accelerated my growth, and I love using that knowledge to accelerate my student's growth. I teach tonal harmony (as you'd learn in music school), focus on groove and rhythm (which is commonly neglected in music school), and an awareness of new technology (which was ignored when I was in music school). I believe because no matter which direction you are coming from, you will come to this intersection making music in this era.+ Read More
I have taught many different types of students in the last 12 years, from children to grandparents. I have taught Upright Bass, Electric Bass, Guitar, and Ableton lessons. I am classically trained, but have had a lot of real life gigging and music making experience, which informs how I teach. I think everyone should learn technology and composition basics to frame how music is made in this modern era. Most of all, it should be a fun rewarding experience. I love to teach and watch my students progress and be able to play the music they love!+ Read More
I have performed in a huge variety of situations over my career. I've been in Orchestras, jazz bands, hip hop group, rock groups, anything that is good music. I have played with bands and musicians such as Wild Belle, Cayucas, Sinkane, Lenny Pickett, Bernard Purdie, and Mark Giuliana. I have travelled the world playing music, and played festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and TV shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Conan. This variety of performance situations really informs my teaching, and I tend to get students playing the music they love very quickly.+ Read More
I have written and co written many songs. I work out of my home studio with hardware gear and with music technology, primarily Ableton, Reason, and Garage Band. I love the combination of the sounds and textures of real instruments with the editing and creative capabilities that computer software offers. I have done film scoring, dance music, recording bands live, and many other hybrid musical situations.+ Read More

Great teacher! Kellen has made me really excited about the guitar again.
Kellen is a great instructor. He explains musical ideas in an way that I qet quickly. I'll show him a song and he'll pick it up and teach it to me right away. I would definitely recommend him!
I had been playing guitar for a while, mostly learning songs and chord changes on my own. I wanted to take lessons to work on composing my own songs, and this is where Kellen really helped me. He had a lot of ideas and suggestions that were really helpful in trying to create a unique composing style. He's a trained musician, and it shows when he helps me with music theory and exposing me to lots of different styles of music.+ Read More
I had played bass for a few years, and decided I wanted to take lessons when I felt stuck. It was fun, but I didn't really have a focus on bass I was excited about. I found that with Kellen. He really focused on rhythm and grooving with the drummer and I got hooked. I highly recommend him, especially if you need to work on your groove!+ Read More
I had started taking gigs with new bands but I was struggling with my sight reading and general music theory. I found Kellen through a friend and I'm so glad. He was friendly and super knowledgeable and I felt like it all clicked all of a sudden. I was able to learn easily online from my home in Portland. I keep taking lessons with him because I keep learning great tips about performance and theory. He's also really funny. Kellen's awesome!+ Read More
