Music Theory with Joshua H.

I’ve been a composer for nearly 15 years and a pianist for over 20. My music has been played by professional and university ensembles from Los Angeles to New York and Paris to Helsinki. I’m also an experienced teacher who has taught both in university classrooms and privately. I’m a flexible, enthusiastic teacher who is organized, patient, and encouraging with a hands-on teaching style. My students have had a range of successful outcomes: from being admitted as a composition major at their desired university to an entire class of non-music-readers learning to harmonically analyze music in a semester’s time. I believe in a multifaceted approach to musical learning. For example, composition involves understanding how to become a better listener, a key to developing your own style. For pianists, I believe composition is a tool that improves active listening, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and interpretive abilities.
