I’ve been a composer for nearly 15 years and a pianist for over 20. My music has been played by professional and university ensembles from Los Angeles to New York and Paris to Helsinki. I’m also an experienced teacher who has taught both in university classrooms and privately. I’m a flexible, enthusiastic teacher who is organized, patient, and encouraging with a hands-on teaching style. My students have had a range of successful outcomes: from being admitted as a composition major at their desired university to an entire class of non-music-readers learning to harmonically analyze music in a semester’s time. I believe in a multifaceted approach to musical learning. For example, composition involves understanding how to become a better listener, a key to developing your own style. For pianists, I believe composition is a tool that improves active listening, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and interpretive abilities. I teach: - Composition (classical, pop, rock, jazz, experimental) - Songwriting - Piano - Music theory/analysis - Note-reading - DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations like Logic Pro and Ableton Live) - Music Production - Ear training and musicianship - Notation software - College prep All levels and ages are welcome. If you’re studying piano, composition, or theory, I recommend that you have a piano or MIDI keyboard at home to practice on. I look forward to crafting music with you!

I am very, very pleased with the lessons I have taken with Joshua Hey. He is warm and personable, and his love for his art is infectious. He models his lessons to my level of ability, needs, and areas of interest. I find that his responses to my work are both carefully considered and fun to hear. Joshua brings examples of music to my lessons that relate to my work, something that I very much appreciate. I leave my lessons feeling excited and eager to get back to my piano and computer—which, by the way, is my preference: Joshua has told me several times that handwritten scores are fine.

Josh provided music composition instruction for my two sons, ages 10 and 12. He worked with both kids on composing songs for their different instruments, guitar and violin, and was able to work with both children in the same lesson. He was able to engage them in a conversation about music and their musical interests. The boys described Josh as someone who "offered constructive criticism and gave us fun activities while explaining things in a way that we would understand. It helped me understand how to take an inspiration and make it into music."
