I am a professional singer, pianist, songwriter, and recording artist. I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a Bachelors of Music, specifically voice.
Voice students can expect to improve week to week in their vocal technique. Every voice has a unique timbre; I teach students to release built up tension and apply foundational techniques in order to unlock their own individual sound. I can help any student to sing with freedom, confidence, and expression.
I teach piano students of all different ages and experience levels. I studied classical piano for 16 years, and contemporary keyboard for 7 of those. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.
As a professional recording artist I frequently take trips to Nashville for co-writing, recording, and meeting with record labels. I have written with well-known writers like Mia Fieldes from Hillsong, Tony Wood from Provident Label Group, Stu G from Delirious?, and Jon Steingard from Hawk Nelson. I love to mentor students who want to become effective, dynamic songwriters.
My personal passion is contemporary music but I firmly believe that great technique is essential to any and every style. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!
I was a piano and voice teacher at the School of Rock in Carmel Indiana.
Founded in 1944, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Inc. (NATS) is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 7,000 members worldwide.
Very good with kids! Great first lesson for my daughter.
It was a great lesson. Learning a lot to better my vocals.
Absolutely fantastic educator. Josh positively and energetically instructs each and every lesson. His musical knowledge base, as well as sheer talent, is impressive, and he readily shares this with his students. My 12-year old daughter has greatly improved from his piano tutelage in the last 18 months. I would recommend Josh Lavendar to everyone of all ages.+ Read More
Josh is a fantastic teacher. I learned so much from him and I highly recommend him as a teacher. He is positive and very knowledgeable.
He does a great job at making me feel comfortable enough to be confident but not so comfortable that I don't challenge myself and progress. Great teacher! I highly recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to sing well.
Josh made the lesson fun. Even after one day I could feel a difference in my singing.
I WILL LAKE TO SINGING
Had fun at my first lesson.
Had good experience at first lesson.
Not too impressed by the first lesson. Expect better in the future classes.
Within 5 minutes of my first lesson, I immediately felt confident in my decision to take vocal lessons! I could go on in great detail, but I'd rather go PRACTICE! In all seriousness, Josh is simultaneously enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and encouraging. I greatly look forward to my next lesson!+ Read More

Josh's personality and approach make my daughter's piano lessons fun and interesting. He is great!
I am currently taking online Piano lessons from Josh.
(With the emphasis being on Christian music)
So far it has been a great experience. Josh is a super cool guy and has very calm, easy-going, and joyful personality. All these things combined make for a pleasant environment.
I have not taken any piano lessons before Josh (I was very much at the beginner level when I started my lesson). Josh did a great job of easing me into the piano without overwhelming me with information and/or techniques.
With his background, I feel like Josh is over-qualified to teach the piano - especially to beginners like myself, but he did a great job of teaching the basics and moving to more advanced techniques based on my skill level and the way I was progressing.
He also did a great job of challenging me to take my piano lessons to the next level without overwhelming me. He has definitely helped out tremendously in helping me learn the piano thus far and highly recommend him as a teacher.
He has a great structure to the course but also leaves room for the student to give input on things that they may want to learn, such as: songs, techniques, etc.
Additionally, he has done a great job of making the piano make sense. For example, sometimes I can get lost with all the different ways to play a chord, but he helped explain it in simple terms that makes sense.
I have learned so much from Josh in such a short amount of time and like I said, I highly recommend you take him as your teacher.. Great Teacher!
Josh is a student of his craft. He works hard to be the best and is great at teaching others to be excellent as well. He has a very creative approach to teaching and understands a lot of different styles. I have taken years worth of lessons and as an improv type artist myself, Josh has helped teach me a number of elements that were outside my knowledge base. Solid guy and a solid instructor.+ Read More
Mr. Josh L. was incredibly helpful in my development as a vocalist. His demeanor was perfect in instructing me during our sessions by being very picky in technique but never intimidating. It was refreshing to take lessons from someone who is able to teach from experience and not just from some backyard choir.+ Read More
