Music Therapy/Jazz Guitar, Psychology
About John G.
I started playing guitar from the time I was 11 years old and started getting paid for my first gigs with a band when I was 16. Shortly after that, I started teaching my first students when I was 17 years old. I was constantly busy, driving from school to peoples houses on weekdays while studying jazz guitar with an instructor, as well as with the paul green school of rock. On weekends I performed with paying gigs in live bands.
I have studied music and guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusets, and Music Therapy, Jazz Guitar, and Psychology at Montclair State University/Cali School of Music. I currently continue to further my education, and am learning every day.
From my education background, I have a certification in Master Luthiery from the Summit School of Guitar Building and repair.
Besides working as a guitar teacher, technician, and performer, I have also worked as an open mic host.
I am currently 26 years old and still performing, teaching, and working as a technician and Luthier on a regular day to day basis.
When teaching, I like to tailor each lesson to that particular student. I take great care in planning and expanding each encounter for both the student's short term and long term development in both life and music. I aim to offer: Music theory and the application of such to the guitar. While most teachers either focus on theory, or learning and playing songs on an instrument, I find it important to be able to use, as an example, applicable theories such as scales and key signatures along with a foundation to the songs we will be learning. These songs can either be of my own or the student's choosing. Essentially, by approaching lessons with a rational knowledge of music along with a hands on experience of playing an instrument, I can create a fun and successful experience for any student.
