Jazz Studies

Drum lessons for students of all ages from a BMus graduate with 10+ years drum study and passion!

I have been playing and studying Drum Set for over ten years and am a self taught Conga player with two year experience in a collegiate Latin Jazz band. I am well versed in many different styles of music including but not limited to Jazz, Funk, Rock, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian music. I love teaching students new to the Drums and am very confident in my ability to articulate and convey the necessary technical and learning skills which will make students self-sufficient in their own musical ability and studies. For students who have already become comfortable behind a Drum Set, I offer my own experience in Jazz and Latin Music studies. I can set students who wish to explore or begin their journey into Jazz music on the right path.

Hello! My name is J.J. and I'm very excited to be your Drum teacher! I am 28 years old and have been playing and studying the Drum Set since my junior year of high school in 2011. I have worked in and around Dutchess County, NY since 2016 as a Jazz sideman and as a member of a couple local Funk bands. My musical styles and experience include but are not limited to Jazz, Funk, Rock, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian music for Drum Set. I am a self-taught Conga player and played percussion in the Purchase Latin Jazz Orchestra for two years. I listen to a lot more music than what I've previously mentioned so if you're into Metal, Alternative Rock, Progressive Rock, or something entirely different don't be shy! I'm always looking for good music and would love to share my favorites with you as well! As a teacher I believe that learning proper techniques, ergonomics, limb interdependence, and how to read music are key to become a self-sufficient drummer. My aim as a teacher is to give you, the student, the knowledge on how to properly hold the stick, how to easily move around your drum kit, how to use each of your limbs together, and how to apply these techniques to whatever style of music you want to explore. I am very comfortable and patient with students new to the Drums and can teach reading and rudiments to any beginners who wish to learn. Learning your rudiments and how to read music will give any student the ability to teach themselves and can set them on a lifelong path of study and performance! For Drummers already comfortable behind their set, I offer my experience as a Jazz student and musician. I can introduce Drummers new to Jazz to the repertoire and skills needed to become a working Jazz musician or just how to perform and fit into the music. My goal is to give you the ability to teach yourself! I want to set people on the path they want with the skills needed to learn and explore the music they love. I hope that we can learn, discover, and play great music together!
