    About Jake L.

I'm a contracted studio and touring musician for a major Seattle record label (Barsuk) who has 8 years of experience tutoring the arts to all ages. I’ve played hundreds of shows, and my guitar and bass playing appears on a handful of albums. Since 2009, I've been a part-time K-12 arts tutor with a nonprofit called 826 National. I've taught lots of kids, big and small, the ropes of the fretboard, the chord books, and the fundamentals of rhythm, melody, and musical hearing. I studied theatre and classical guitar at Whitman College, so I can help you improve your technical playing and performative abilities too. As of May 2017, I'm new to TakeLessons/charging money for teaching privately, so please know how much I appreciate your patronage and audience. I know the importance of a patient, encouraging, knowledgeable teacher when learning the arts, and I think I can help you find strength in self-musical expression. Every person is different and every student learns differently; I think the best tutors can be flexible to their students' needs and be able to provide alternative learning solutions when roadblocks appear. We will communicate well with each other about learning goals and tactics, and we will have a LOT of fun on the guitar together! By the end of 5 lessons, I'll help you be more confident and/or versed in your guitar playing, and we'll only have lots more to learn and explore!

    Experience

    Musician

    Mar, 2015 - Present

    Self-Employed

Since graduating from Whitman College three years ago, I've been hired as a musician for the following Seattle artists (all of whom you should check out #online...!): Chris Staples (live touring guitar, vocals, and keys), Ben Yudin (of the band Cayucas [songwriting and production]), Hibou (live touring guitar and vocals), Cataldo (recorded bass guitar), Fauna Shade (live guitar, bass guitar, and songwriting support), Sloucher (live bass guitar), and Ruler (live and recorded guitar). I also make music under a pseudonym, Jake Laundry, and you can find/stream me everywhere online. I put on a #whacky live show with costume changes, music videos, and political satire.

    Programs Assistant

    Jun, 2012 - Sep, 2012

    ScholarMatch

ScholarMatch is a San Francisco nonprofit cofounded by author/screenwriter/philanthropist Dave Eggers. We matched low-income, at risk students in the Bay Area seeking college money with a big tech/celebrity donor base.

    Programs Assistant

    Jun, 2010 - Aug, 2010

    Một Dấu Nối (Helping Link)

Helping Link is a Vietnamese community center in Seattle's Little Saigon neighborhood. I was a paid summer intern who–with another college-aged student and a dozen volunteers–planned, coordinated, and taught a 10-week summer school program for 25 K-12 students from the neighborhood. I taught a writing class, a daily group creative project, and secured/chaperoned weekly field trips around the area. Our goal was to keep the students' minds sharp for school, and to enrich the students' experience of their neighborhood/city's local culture. And to have fun!

    Youth Mentor

    Sep, 2009 - Mar, 2015

    826 National/826 Seattle

Part time, sometimes volunteer position after school tutoring children K-12. When I wasn't helping students write creative stories or do math homework, I was teaching a Songwriting Club (that later got taken over by none other than Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie!).
