I come by music honestly, being the son of a professional composer and a record executive. I started formal lessons at 5 years old on piano, then drums; the latter under the tutelage of legendary jazz drummer Eddie Locke. I started on my first DAW when I was 12 years old and would spend hours after school and on weekends in my father's home studio. I attended New York's famed LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and Performing Arts, with a focus on jazz and classical drumming. Here, I received a conservatory level education in both drum performance and general musicianship, studying theory, musicology, ear training, piano, and bass. While in high school I entered the field professionally, working as an assistant engineer at a production studio while running my own home studio as a business for tracking and mixing. I graduated with honors, having won departmental and percussion specific scholarships and awards. Following high school I attended the University of Michigan, pursuing both a BS in Sound Engineering and a BFA in Performing Arts Technology with a focus on music production and composition. While in college I continued to run my own recording business, specializing in remote recording at concert halls and other venues. I earned merit based scholarships, including the API Visionary Scholarship, awarded for excellence in music recording. I graduated with high honors. I have enjoyed many roles in myriad studios. My longest tenure was at the now defunct Stadium Red in New York, which was home to super producer Just Blaze. While there, in addition to engineering and production work, I also instructed interns and assistants on everything from studio practices to recording and mixing techniques. These days I am fully freelance, doing mostly mixing work, though I also enjoy my fair share of producing, composing, and sound designing. I have also continued to teach since my fledgeling days supervising interns at Stadium Red and have helped many students add to their toolboxes and integrate deeper, more nuanced record-making skills. Beyond my education and professional field work, I have had the pleasure of producing, mixing, and/or recording Lake Street Dive, Cassidy, Talib Kweli, Joey Bada$$, Nyck Caution, Iron Solomon, Prince Royce, and Vulfpeck, among others. I have composed featured on Showtime and Fox News, as well as several national ad campaigns and feature films. I have done UI sound design for major product

Jake Birch is a highly accomplished musician, audio engineer, producer and composer. As a repeat client I have been greatly impressed, inspired, and satisfied by his work. With a comprehensive and robust experience in music composition and arranging, Jake is particularly adept at discerning precise audio detail which is especially invaluable in the realm of non-composition domains such as mixing and production. This broad skill-set seems to lend itself to an infallible sense of quality control that is often lacking in today's climate of self-taught and under-experienced "audio professionals." I can't recommend Jake enough, in his hands you won't be disappointed.

I couldn't rate Jake's performance higher, as a mixing engineer, producer, or instructor. I have referred him to several people in the short time since we've worked together, and I will be referring him in the future. One of the things that is unique to Jake is that he offers deep sensitivity, personality, and intuition in his work, so his clients feel cared for, listened to , and engaged on a human level. But where Jake sets himself apart from so many, is that his human-ness is coupled with a very deep and refined sense of craft , knowledge, and technical prowess. Jake is fluent in many musical crafts, instruments, and genres , and with that practical and creative adaptability , he offers an equally rare degree in terms of his engagement with clients. His ears are also really good!!!! I learned a lot working with him, and plan to call him the next time I need help with a variety of musical things.

Jake is an excellent teacher, musician, and audio engineer., He taught me fundamental and advanced mixing techniques a few years back. He was extremely prepared, knowledgeable and had a knack for translating complex concepts into much more manageable terminology and ideas. I learned a lot from him and still utilize many of his workflows to this day!
