My name is Jacob and I have played guitar professionally in Baltimore and Northern Virginia for the past four years. I specialize in jazz and funk guitar but I also have extensive experience playing rock, Latin, blues, and have even been developing the ability to play classical with a pick. I graduated from Goucher College in 2011 with a degree in Music Performance and Jazz Studies. Whether its understanding music theory and composition, learning how to improvise in different stylistic contexts, developing chops, playing with other musicians, or simply plugging in and playing your favorite songs at a volume your neighbors won't appreciate- I can help! *** Lesson Details *** I consider myself to be a fairly laid back teacher. I understand people have busy schedules and the last thing I want is for students to feel nervous, intimidated, or overwhelmed during the lesson process. I feel that if I do my job right, students will see how rewarding and fun guitar can be and will then feel more inclined to put in the necessary time and effort to really progress. I don't have a specific curriculum because each student will have different goals and musical tastes. I do emphasize learning some fundamentals because I view them as universally useful in all styles: scales/arpeggios, chord forms, dexterity building, reading, and basic music theory. However, I will do my best to show students these fundamentals at work in the context of whichever style they enjoy. *** Studio Equipment *** living room seating for parents *** Travel Equipment *** I can provide a guitar and an amp. I expect my students to own a guitar in order for them to practice outside the lesson. *** Specialties *** I studied Jazz guitar in college but I also love to play funk, rock, Latin, folk, and even classical (not in the strict sense- I enjoy transcribing classical guitar pieces and playing them with a pick. Even though purists might disagree, I think it sounds good and it works great for developing technique and overall musicality.
