Experienced guitar instructor of over 10 years, offering highly-personalized lessons built around the musical preferences, needs and goals of my students. I teach students of all ages in a warm, welcoming, LGBTQIA+ friendly environment.

For beginner students the focus will be primarily on getting you able to play songs from artists you love quickly and enjoyably, with a focus on developing good rhythm, technique, guitar care and a solid foundation of chords that can be used in innumerable songs. Theory will be given in small, easily-digestible pieces, and always within the context of actual musical examples. If you're interested in learning to sing while playing, I'll also help you find ways to incorporate it early on so that it becomes more natural as you progress.

For students with some experience the direction of our lessons will be largely determined by your personal needs and goals, but subjects we might cover include songwriting, finger-picking, expanding chord vocabulary, scales/modes, improvisation, slide guitar, alternate tunings, advice and direction on playing live and any number of other things that come up over a lifetime of learning the guitar.

About Gabriel R.

I am a professional guitarist, singer, and songwriter, with 10 years of experience helping budding guitarists reach their musical goals and grow as musicians. I have never found anything more fulfilling than watching my students learn to love and take ownership of music, and discovering the individual needs and strengths of each of my students is one of the greatest joys in my life.

I pull from many sources in my teaching and cover an extremely wide range of genres, styles and techniques. My teaching is heavily personalized, and we will specifically work to meet your individual musical goals and learn the songs that you already know, love and dream of playing. Fingerstyle, flatpicking, warm acoustic tones or melt-your-face-off effect-heavy electric, we'll work together to find and master the sound you've been looking for!

Here’s some things you can expect from our time together:

Building a self-selected repertoire of songs.
Honing techniques from brief, effective exercises.
Learning music theory in a gradual, easy-to-digest way.
Analyzing how the songs that speak to you are put together.
Improvizing based on the genre and style that interests you.
Putting it all together through songwriting and experimentation.

The exact balance of what we’re going to do is 100% up to the student’s interests and goals, but each of the above elements will contribute to your becoming a confident, well-balanced musician with a huge arsenal of musical tools and tricks at your disposal to express yourself however you want.

In dealing with the current COVID-19 crisis, I have suspended all in-person guitar lessons until such a time as there is either a functional vaccine or a highly effective and well-circulated treatment. That said, local students can certainly transition from online to in-person as the world becomes safer.

Guitar Instructor
Jul 2008 - Jan 2019

Self-Employed

Since high school I've been teaching the guitar. At first only to friends (mostly for fun), and then to help make ends meet through college. It's not always been a smooth road, and I won't pretend that the lessons I started offering in the summer between my Freshman and Sophomore years of high school were pedagogically sound, but these 10 years of teaching really honed me as a guitar instructor. I've had a lot of experience identifying the kinds of hurdles that different students face when learning the guitar, and I've learned through doing to develop different strategies to overcome them.
