    About Florence H.

Hi I'm Flo, and music is one of my favorite things in life! My mother is a Suzuki violin teacher so I've been lucky enough to have music as a big part of my life since... well, in utero.  Literally, Bach was played at my birth.   I grew up in New Zealand (home of Flight Of The Conchords and about 40 million sheep) and moved to LA after college, where I performed extensively as a singer-songwriter in LA, SF and NY.  I especially love LA’s Hotel Cafe, where I've played many of my own shows over the years, as well as opened for artists such as Laura Marling and Damien Rice.   I have also done vocal session work for various artists such as Mark Foster (of Foster the People),  I have written and performed songs and commercial jingles for production companies like Strike Anywhere (Barry Jenkins of Moonlight’s former production company), and had several of my original songs licensed for film and TV productions.     I also co-founded, performed and toured with the band 'The Amber' for several years, with vocal coach Ryland Shelton, and grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Libby Lavella.       In terms of my musical background - in New Zealand I was classically trained in voice and music theory up to ATCL level (Trinity College London), I sang with choirs, barbershop quartets, a big band and a couple of jazz combos!  In college I started being involved in indie bands (my first band being a Belle and Sebastian inspired 4-piece called Harry).  This led to us being on an "idol" type TV show for songwriting called 'TV2 Songstar' where a song I co-wrote and sang was the runner up in the contest - meaning we had our single, "Green" produced and released on national radio.  My personal influences in my own music lean towards Feist and Jenny Lewis; singer-songwriter driven indie pop with a little alt-country vibe!.    Making music has been such a positive, important part of my life, and my goal is to help it be that for you as well!
