Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy

Learn piano from a teacher who tailors each lesson to best fit each individual student!

No matter what my students’ goals are, I strive to help them learn what they want in a style that makes the most sense for them. Everybody learns differently, so I always to aim to be flexible in how different topics are approached and figured out. If students need help making goals, I do my best to provide a variety of options to choose from and try out! For piano specifically, I will say that I am not a classical piano teacher. I can teach how to note read with sheet music for varying levels of music, however I come from a more modern lens in teaching some other concepts with this instrument!

I have enjoyed teaching guitar, ukulele, and piano for close to 6 years now!  Academically, I studied Guitar Performance at the McNally Smith College of Music for three semesters (until it closed), and after obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from the University of Minnesota. My time as a performance major sharpened my skills as a musician, especially in a variety of styles that I enjoy performing in and teaching today (including Pop, Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz, Classical, Reggae, Funk, R&B, Folk, Afro-Latin, and Improv). My music therapy education has also allowed me to diversify my teaching approaches in ways I believe really benefit the private lesson environment. For just over 5 years, I have been enlisted as a musician in the Minnesota Army National Guard Band. I am a Sergeant, the lead guitarist for my unit’s Rock Band, and also have experience performing as a guitarist in our Country Band and Jazz Combo. Outside of this, I enjoy playing electric guitar, acoustic guitar, cello, and bass guitar for a local church and some weddings here and there! No matter what my students want to learn, I work with them to find out the best and most enjoyable ways to do so! Come try a lesson, and use that “Ask a question” feature above beforehand for anything else you're curious about!

Dylan was so flexible with scheduling and great to work with. I'm a music therapist who wanted to take my practical guitar skills to the next level. Dylan worked with me on some skills and techniques that I could take immediately into my professional work.

Dylan is a fantastic instrumental teacher. I have been in the instrument-lessons-world for over 15 years as a student and a teacher, and I cannot recommend Dylan enough. He brings a level of personal care and devotion that is difficult to train--the student's growth matters to him. He was appropriately firm in holding me accountable to my goals, but generous in his understanding when I did not match up to it. His wide variety of professional experience in the music world (both military and private) gave him authority to answer questions and humility to tell me when he needed to take a week to seek the answer. Dylan is very adjustable and was for me the whole time.

Dylan is THE BEST and made me feel so comfortable while I learned something new! He always made sure the lesson content was a fit for me- from picking songs I liked to finding parallels between guitar/other instruments. 1000% recommend to anyone thinking about diving into guitar :)
