Composer and guitarist David began formal music training at the age of 5 on the drums. He taught himself guitar as a teenager and began playing in local rock bands. Initially entering college as a Journalism major, his passion for music led him to Meramec College where he studied Music Theory with Robert C. Howard and classical guitar with Larry Bolles. From 1990 through 1993, he attended Webster University, and became only the second composer in the school's history to receive the BM/MM Scholarship. While at Webster, he studied composition with Dr. Kendall Stallings, Robert Chamberlin, and Kim Portnoy, Jazz History with Paul Demarinis, and 18th Century Counterpoint with Dr. Eloise Jarvis. During his education, he performed with many student ensembles and sat in on master classes by the great sitarist and surbaharist, Imrat Khan and jazz guitarist Peter Leitch.
In 1993 he started St. Louis SoundWorks with Grammy nominated Adam Long and Mark McClanahan that specialized in mobile recording, and composing music for films and commercials.
As a musician, David has composed over 200 pieces for various instruments and combinations from small chamber ensembles to full orchestra. He was bandleader of two creative ensembles that focused on alternative notation compositions and improvised music, and later co-founded the avant-garde influenced rock band Diverted Course which released two CD's.
As a teacher, David has taught classical guitar and musicianship as an adjunct faculty member at Meramec College and Webster University. He has given seminars on the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Anthony Braxton. He has been teaching privately for 23 years and many of his students have gone on to successful music careers and performed all over the world.

I teach students of all ages in a fun and positive manner. I am flexible and will tailor the lessons to satisfy your own individual goals. Whether you are a beginner that wants to gain a foundation in technique, sight reading, and basic theory or an intermediate or more advanced player that wants to increase their knowledge and polish their skills, I will devise a plan to meet your needs. I encourage regular practice and like my students to keep a journal to monitor their progress.
I teach a variety of styles including classical guitar, blues, rock, jazz, and avant-garde.
Ultimately, I believe everyone needs a creative outlet, a way to express themselves, and has something unique to say, and I aim to help those students find their own voice.

David is a fabulous teacher. I am very pleased, he was very good with my eight year old grandson.
A wonderful teacher, very good. Jesse Sittner
David is an excellent teacher and I’m really enjoying the lessons and learning a lot.
David approaches teaching based on the goals of the student and not a one approach fits all style.
I highly recommend him.
My son is excited to be learning!
Dave has been able to take me on a great journey! We have covered many kinds of music, and I'm greatly appreciative of his patience and encouragement. He was able to tell after just a couple of lessons that my original plans for getting lessons was never going to be enough. He introduced several topics, and whetted my appetite for more! If only all teachers could open doors this way!!!Show More
We are extremely happy with our decision to go with David. He is extremely encouraging and positive during his lessons and his teaching skills are top notch!!!
Hands down the best guitar instructor in St Louis.
Since retiring in 2006 I tried a few others but David brings expertise in not only guitar mechanics and virtuosity but an understanding of deeper musical principles and its application to the guitar student.
Dave is a true genius in the art of Guitar, no matter the musical genre - or -whether its Led Zepplin or Brouwer classical guitar method.he can't be beat.
David was extremely professional and positive. His enthusiasm was great and he was versatile in adapting his lesson to the needs of our twin sons who both want to play guitar!
Really friendly teacher who instantly made me feel comfortable in his home. Very patient and always encouraging regardless of skill level. Opened up communication outside of lessons in the case that I had a question, David told me I could always contact him. Highly recommend!Show More
Dave is very patient & very encouraging which is exactly the type of teacher I needed since I've never played guitar or any other musical instrument. His can-do attitude is infectious.
David is very knowledgable and thorough, introduced my son to first principles of guitar in his own studio in a relaxed way. Modes of education (reading guitar notes, music, etc) were introduced and explained. Extremely satisfied.
He explains things in a way that I understand. I can tell he really loves music and teaching. He's great!
I've been learning songwriting and music theory from David and it couldn't be any better. He's very professional and personable, and he makes sure to work with you, not above you. He shows a genuine enthusiasm for his students' musical interests and formulates instruction around them. David encourages questions, which creates a comfortable and effective teacher-student interaction. Between my weekly lessons, I find myself impatiently counting down the days until my next scheduled lesson. While the genre of songwriting that I've been working on with David's guidance has been contemporary Christian, I'm sure that he would be an effective teacher in any genre, whether the student were writing songs or playing them.Show More
After the initial panic of trying to learn something at such a ripe old age I was reassured by other reviews that David would be the best bet. They were correct and I recommend him to any age group. After a welcome at the front door assuring me that I was at the right location, he excels in making you feel comfortable. He listens to questions and told me no question was stupid. Takes everything at your speed and recaps from the week before. Is thorough and stops you when finger placement is not correct so you don't begin bad habits. Looks up and acquaints himself with the songs that you want to learn and will stop covering a certain area if you do not want to learn it. He sends you home with just the right amount of practice work and after 3 lessons I feel like I'm getting all of what he's teaching and am improving and adding on more lessons. So happy that I chose David.Show More
My Outstanding Journey
I can't say enough about what I have learned over the past year. To be able to play the gift of music and understand the foundation of it's existence, is truly an edifying experience. My instructor has been absolutely fabulous. His patience, knowledge and his keen ability to translate his knowledge to the specific level of understanding of his students, is nothing short of great. Kudos to you all for having the resident talent to make my, and others, dreams of learning to play music a reality.
Best of wishes to all this upcoming New Year.
I'm a 25 year old teacher and decided I wanted to start taking guitar lessons during my first summer off. I looked online and found David through Take Lessons reviews and am SO glad I did. He is such a fantastic teacher, making lessons fun and relaxing after a long day. After just a little over a year, I have learned such a wide range of skills thanks to David's willingness to develop a program filled with variety. I highly recommend David to anyone who is eager to learn!
Dave M. proves you can teach an old dog new tricks
I am a 66 year old retired IT professional that has a passion for guitar playing. During my working years I did not have the time to indulge my desire to learn how to play. After dabbling with self instruction and a few music store instructors these past few years of retirement I finally found a teacher truly committed to his students. I feel like for the first time I am making progress and learning how to play guitar. Dave is enthusiastic and thorough with his lessons and a true professional in his craft. He has instilled me with an infectious desire to move forward and I can't wait for the next lesson to come around. I highly recommend him and his approach to other potential students young or old.
Classical guitar lessons with David
Off and on since my 20s I've fooled around with guitar lessons but never lasted very long. I am 62 now. I relayed this to David and he laid out an organized plan for systematic improvement. But he was very honest with me about the importance of good practice habits. I've been with him almost 5 months and showing progress. His enthusiasm and patience is appreciated. Thanks, Dave.
This product has great features
I am over 50 years of age and decided to take up playing the guitar. David is extremely patient and very enthusiastic which makes learning fun (imagine that). Highly recommended
Surreal! A gift for life! Thanks Dave
I am 56 years of age and have always loved music. As a freshman in college in 1974, I enrolled in some music theory classes and began playing guitar. Not one to discipline myself, I learned only some basic chords and a few little things throughout the years. One day I finally said to myself that it was time to "finally learn how to play the guitar." The good thing with respect to my disposition was that not once did I ever think I was too old to learn. It was a year ago on Christmas morning when my wife presented me with a card containing a number of lessons with Take Lessons. I was elated, anxious and excited to begin to learn what I had put off for half of my life. When I first called my instructor, Dave Murray, I knew this was going to be very edifying and very special for me. As a fellow instructor, I've come to realize that it takes a special person to really understand the needs of students and to appropriate a lesson plan that meets both the individual's elementary and progressive needs. Dave has done this marvelously. I can't measure the joy of success I've experienced learning to play with Dave, whom I'm here to tell you, is a tremendous asset to your organization. I was embarrassed somewhat when we began my lessons as I was all thumbs and very clumsy. Dave was incredible as he always applied the correct method that not only instilled my confidence, but allowed me to make sounds I never thought possible. I'm playing things on the guitar today that again, I never, ever thought were possible. Dave has a meticulous method to his instruction where he introduces things, simple or complex, during the tenure of lessons that are a future puzzle piece that logically fits somewhere down the road. I find his method of instruction intriguing and challenging. Again, at 56 years of age, I can honestly say, this is the greatest gift I could ever have bestowed upon myself. I'm never going to be on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine, but thanks to Dave, I'll always have one of the greatest gifts anyone can give themselves - the gift of playing music.
Dave instructs my daughter and son in guitar. They're both convinced they are Dave's favorite student. I believe that in itself explains why he is incredibly effective with children. He has them feeling great about music and their progress. Certainly he is an excellent technical instructor. Yes he teaches proper hand position, good tone and so on and so forth. But his ability to connect with children makes him a one of a kind instructor.
David is enthusiastic, patient and attentive to details. Very organized instruction.
I am very happy with David as my instructor. He is enthusiastic, patient and attentive to details. Very organized with his instruction. I look forward to the lessons.
A Great Teacher

The perfect pace
David is very good at what he does. I went into this with no music skills and thought I would get frustrated. David knew what and when to teach and the pace was perfect for me.

Great Guitar Instructor
Dave is very patient with his students. He tries to find subtle faults and offers tips to fine tune them. Always on time and provides quality instruction. He understands a student's needs and plans his lessons accordingly. Very glad to have him as an instructor!
I couldn't be more satisfied with Dave as my guitar instructor. He's a real pro and clearly knows his stuff. Just as important, he conveys his knowledge very effectively to the student. Dave's a genuinely nice guy who makes it fun while encouraging improvements, no matter how small. Dave's clearly in the right profession and I appreciate what he's been able to do for me.Thanks

My son, Andy, is taking guitar lessons from Dave. He is enjoying it very much and learning a lot
I am in my 50s and am trying to make up for lost time. I've been playing for 2-3 years, but had reached a plateau and wasn't getting better. Dave quickly figured out where I needed to focus, and I soon began to see the improvement I was looking for. I highly recommend Dave.
I have been taking lessons with Dave for over a month now and he has been one of the best instructors I have ever had...and I have been through a few over the years. He is both willing and capable to tailor a lesson program to each individuals wants and desires. Dave provides enough force and conviciton to motivate an intermediate/advanced player, but is also patient and understanding and would be great for children as well.He also understands that what a student wants may change from time to time and he is willing to cope and go along for the ride.I look forward to continue to study with Dave and would highly recommend him to anyone interested in taking lessons.
Great teacher. Great guitarist.
David is an amazing guitarist and teacher, I would recommend him to anyone that is really serious about learning the guitar(beginner through advanced). I just wish I would have started lessons with David earlier, I am very fortunate to have him as an instructor. I am sure he can take me where I want to be on the guitar.
Knowledgeable, adaptable, enthusiastic, diligent
I highly recommend Dave. He is serious about the guitar yet is pleasant to work with. He is familiar with many playing styles and techniques. He has worked hard to accommodate my goals--locating/printing the songs I want to learn, copying exercises for me, and adapting to suit me as I develop. He is friendly, energetic, and respectful to me even though I'm a beginner.
My nine-year-old is new to the guitar, and is already playing well - thanks to David's perfectly tailored lessons. David has an upbeat, motivational style that makes learning both fun and productive.
I am a 35 year old beginer, absolutely no experience. I can't even begin to say how great Dave has been. I would recomend him to anyone from a a beginer like myself or those with a little experience.
Our son is enjoying his lessons with Dave.
