Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking
About Daniel L.
I graduated from USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles with a Master of Fine Arts degree in film directing. My graduate thesis film "Moment Théâtral" (2007) won the prestigious Jack Nicholson Directing Award. My other work includes the animated feature film "Purim: The Lot" (2013), now available on home video and VOD. Two documentaries I directed, "Kaltag, Alaska" and "Kamchatka: The Salmon Country" were produced in association with the WWF and the Fund for Investigative Journalism. Feature documentaries that I co-wrote and edited premiered at IDFA in Amsterdam, Rotterdam IFF, and others festivals. My latest film "Bagatelle" won Grand Prix at Sochi International Film Festival and premiered at the AFI as part of the highly selective Texas Filmmaker's Showcase. Over the years my films have been supported by grants from Kodak, Panavision, Austin Film Society, Houston Arts Alliance, and others. I am currently in development for a western feature film as a writer/director.
Having taught college-level filmmaking for 11 years I find that most students either have difficulty identifying an idea for a film that they like or have an idea that is too grand in scope for them to make into a short film. In our lessons we will work together toward identifying and framing stories that you can successfully make into effective short films using resources at your disposal. Along the way we will focus on acquiring storytelling skills and cinematic vocabulary that will help you produce short subject content across genres and platforms.
