Learn to express yourself through music with Berklee graduate and touring saxophonist Dan Elbert

As an internationally touring musician and music educator, I have worked with hundreds of students in one-on-one lessons, educational workshops, and outreach concerts around the world. No matter your age, experience, or goals, I would love to help you become a better musician. My approach to teaching is simple. I believe every student has a lens through which music feels exciting and natural. My job as a teacher is to help you discover it. For beginners, you might call this developing an interest or passion for music. Whether you're young or old, this is one of my favorite challenges as a teacher. For advanced players, it may be more about finding your voice, or dealing with issues of ego, purpose, technique, etc. Having spent years studying with some of the best musicians in the world (Joe Lovano, Danilo Perez, John Patittucci, Kenny Werner, George Garzone, and others), I combine lessons from the masters with my own approach to help you grow.

Originally from San Francisco, I have been playing saxophone for nearly 20 years. I have been fortunate to perform all over the world, including recent tours in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Panama, and Costa Rica, and have shared the stage with many great artists, including Danilo Perez, Kenny Werner, Ralph Thomas (Sun Ra Arkestra, Quincy Jones), Benjamin Koen (David Murray, Cecil Taylor), Uriel Barthelemi, Opor Red, R&B singer Allen Stone, and singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer. I have spent many years working with private students ranging of all ages and levels. I have also served as the Performing Arts Director at a large international school, leading their concert band and music education programs. I hold degrees from the University of California, Berkeley; Berklee College of Music; and a masters from the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI), which I attended on a full scholarship. I currently live in New York City, where I work as a saxophonist, teacher, and freelance writer. I previously spent many years living in Boston, and before that, taught and played professionally in Asia.

It got to a point when it felt like that moment in the first Karate Kid movie when Daniel realizes Mr. Miyagi has been preparing him to fight by washing and polishing cars. After a series of lessons on basic music reading and guided exercises and practice I was playing one of my favorite songs. Every lesson with Dan is an adventure in music universe and challenges me in learning more about the instrument, how to play it and more importantly how to enjoy the process.

Dan is a great teacher. In the few months that I've been learning with him, I've grown a lot not only as a saxophonist but as a musician. Lessons with him aren't boring because he's really funny and we always have a great time. The one negative thing about him is that he can be hard to plan with if we need to change lesson times, but that is made up for by the fact that we go over our lesson time almost every week and he doesn't charge us more for that.

I look forward to my lessons with Dan every week. I’m a beginner alto player and Dan does a great job patiently answering all my questions and giving comprehensive advice. He’s very analytical and gives you the detailed context of why what you’re learning is important and how it fits into the context of playing in a band, different styles etc. He will flex lessons based on what you need to know but also what you’re interested in. Most importantly he’s fun and just an all around great guy. He’s the man, what else can I say.
