Claudio, having recently graduated from his Doctorate in Piano Pedagogy and Performance, has over five years of experience teaching at university-level, and in the home.

Are you looking for fun, engaging, and out of the box piano lessons? Claudio, a Chilean award-winning pianist with a Doctorate in pedagogy is now taking on new students in his private studio and also through video calls. Claudio enjoys teaching all ages, all levels and works to incorporate elements of mindfulness, Dalcroze, and Yoga into his teaching.

About Claudio E.

Claudio is a Chilean award-winning pianist, wellness advocate, and pedagogue based in Philadelphia.
You can check his upcoming live-streamed recital on June 24th, at 7 pm ET on his Facebook Page.
He recently obtained his Doctorate in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Michigan, where he taught private and group piano for five years. Recent highlights include presentations at the MTNA National Conference (Spokane, WA) and Collegiate Symposium, touring with the Orchestra of the Americas throughout Europe, and a benefit concert for the Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates in upstate New York.

Music always struck Claudio as a deeply spiritual experience. During childhood, the connection of music and spirituality was felt through the heavenly music of the Brandenburg Concerti, and later in his teens is transformed into a fascination in the intersection of mindfulness and performance. Both in the context of group and private lessons, Claudio is an advocate for the use of mindfulness in learning music. He also incorporates elements of Yoga, as a certified Rainbow Kids Yoga instructor, and Dalcroze in the piano lesson.

Claudio graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor of Music. Before obtaining his D.M.A. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Michigan, he also obtained his M.M. in the same field. His primary teachers include Christopher Harding, Rebecca Penneys, Joseph Gascho, and Matthew Bengtson. Pedagogy teachers include John Ellis and Aya Higuchi.

Claudio is currently pursuing the Global Leaders Program, a one-year fellowship that provides music teachers with access to both international teaching opportunities and a curriculum that centers around social entrepreneurship through music. As part of the 2019-2020 cohort, Claudio is learning about the role that music plays in the pursuit of social justice, and how to foster music initiatives that positively impact the world. He is currently working as a piano instructor at Haverford College, and at the University of the Arts as a Musical Director for their Showcase in NYC. Claudio is also volunteering as Co-Chair of the Piano Honors Program, of the Piano Teachers Congress of New York.

During his free time, Claudio participates in communities with a spiritual purpose, such as the Zen Buddhist Temple of the local chapter of the Mankind Project.

I had the pleasure of having Claudio as my instructor for weekly piano lessons offered through the University of Michigan Medical School. Claudio is an incredible pianist and an equally talented instructor. From the beginning, he created a welcoming environment where we could learn about piano, mindfulness, and ourselves. His ability to tend to such a variety of skill sets and engage learners at all levels was incredible. I am grateful to Claudio for challenging and encouraging us!

Claudio was a wonderful instructor in my time at Michigan. Although I was in a group piano course, Claudio took the time to really cater to each student and their individual needs. My class decided to take our final halfway through the semester, and though we all tested out, Claudio offered to continue to teach us whatever material we needed. I had been working on a piece that was complex for me that I needed help on, and Claudio met with me individually for the rest of the semester, always giving me helpful feedback and assistance on style, form, and technique. Additionally, he is a kind teacher who is understanding but also pushes you to do your best. I'd recommend him to anyone, be it for classical or more pop oriented playing!

He is a very passionate person who manages to transmit all his love for music to his students while working on the piano repertoire. His experience in Dalcroze methodology and mindfulness make classes dynamic and students feel comfortable.

Claudio was a wonderful instructor for an adult beginner. He is patient, upbeat, and enthusiastic. I really appreciated starting each class with a mindful meditation which allowed me to disconnect from other stressors. He was able to inspire a classroom of beginners about the beauty and possibility of playing piano as an activity and as an art. I highly recommend him.

Claudio was the first piano instructor for our son. He made piano -and theory- fun for a young distracted boy. He still worked hard and was able to keep the interest and practice going. We highly recommend Claudio.

Claudio is an excellent piano teacher, he revived in my son the love for music that has been fading, because he is young he understands my son's expectations better, he makes the class and his tasks easier to understand, in a practical way. Very professional but modern he has known how to lead and guide my son in his learning and perfection of his knowledge of music and piano.

Claudio has been great for our 8 year old son. He makes our son want to work harder and do his best in his lessons. He goes at our son's speed of learning but will push him just a little more than he's comfortable with, which is a good thing! He's also funny and very patient with our son. As a result but our son is loving piano with him and learning so much even after just a few months. Would definitely recommend Claudio for any beginner who is enthusiastic to learning piano.

I had lessons with Claudio both in person and online. He is a great piano teacher who knows how to use various ways to explain techniques and interpret music. He cares about student's thoughts and feedback. He also makes great class learning summary which I found very useful to review later during my own practices. It is a really inspiring and fabulous experience taking his lessons!

Claudio is a superb teacher! After being with the same teacher for the last 3 years we noticed that our 10 year old daughter was not very motivated to continue learning music and playing the piano. We decided to switch to Claudio and we are glad that we did (we even extended her lesson time). He does a lot of positive reinforcing and is excellent at teaching on different aspects: technique/posture, note reading and ear training. He also combines different sources (apps, webpages,...) to add variety to lessons and home practice. Overall, our daughter really likes going to piano lessons with Claudio and her motivation is way up.

Dr. Espejo is a one-of-a-kind piano teacher. His originality as a musician is mirrored by his teaching philosophy, blending elements of mindfulness with traditional practicing strategies. He helped me improve my playing for about 8 years, and if I were living in Philly, I would continue working with him. Because working with him is working with a reliable, creative, and thoughtful person who will root for your growth. I couldn't recommend him enough.
(In case useful: while working with me, he also worked with my niece for three years, so I know firsthand that he is an effective instructor with kids.)

I would recommend Claudio as a teacher to piano students at any level! He's an amazing performer himself and has helped me with many practical and musical elements of my technique. His ideas made playing Brahms so much more manageable for me!
