Claudio is a Chilean award-winning pianist, as well as a mindfulness and piano teacher based in Philadelphia. You can check his upcoming live-streamed recital on Fri, November 20th, 7:30 PM, EST on Groupmuse. He recently obtained his Doctorate in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Michigan, where he taught private and group piano for five years. Recent highlights include presentations at the MTNA National Conference (Spokane, WA) and Collegiate Symposium, touring with the Orchestra of the Americas throughout Europe, and a benefit concert for the Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates in upstate New York. Music always struck Claudio as a deeply spiritual experience. During childhood, the connection of music and spirituality was felt through the heavenly music of the Brandenburg Concerti, and later in his teens is transformed into a fascination in the intersection of mindfulness and performance. Both in the context of group and private lessons, Claudio is an advocate for the use of mindfulness in learning music. He also incorporates elements of Yoga, as a certified Rainbow Kids Yoga instructor, and Dalcroze in the piano lesson. Claudio graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelor of Music. Before obtaining his D.M.A. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Michigan, he also obtained his M.M. in the same field. His primary teachers include Christopher Harding, Rebecca Penneys, Joseph Gascho, and Matthew Bengtson. Pedagogy teachers include John Ellis and Aya Higuchi. Picture Claudio recently graduated as well from the Global Leaders Program, a one-year fellowship that provides music teachers with access to both international teaching opportunities and a curriculum that centers around social entrepreneurship through music. As part of the 2019-2020 cohort, Claudio learned about the role that music plays in the pursuit of social justice, and how to foster music initiatives that positively impact the world. He is currently working as a piano instructor at Haverford College and Haverford School. Claudio is also volunteering at the Piano Teachers Congress of New York and the Philadelphia Chapter of MTNA. During his free time, Claudio participates in communities with a spiritual purpose, such as the Zen Buddhist Temple of the local chapter of the Mankind Project.

Claudio is amazing. I actually have him officially as my piano teacher, and he’s amazing for that too, but it was because the day before a piano lesson I had a bad mental breakdown that Claudio guided me during our lesson time in a meditation on surrendering to the divine. It affected me really deeply — he seemed to have intuitively chosen precisely the meditative exercise that would speak to my condition. Claudio guided me in a couple of other meditations in later lessons too, and I always found his voice soothing and the meditations very affecting.

Teachers that teach special needs students require so many positive quailities like compassion, care, patience and commitment. Claudio has an abundance of all of these qualities and so much more. Thank you for your knowledge and incredible insight.

I've been taking piano lessons from Claudio for a couple of months and it's been going great. Even with the remote setup during the pandemic, I'm learning so much and enjoying the challenge of returning to the piano after many years. I'm happy to be making good progress in a short time. He is great for beginners, which is basically my level at this point, but as you progress, he brings a depth of knowledge and context that will add a lot to your playing. Highly recommended.
