About Chelsey S.
Chelsey Joy holds a Bachelors of Music from Brigham Young University-Idaho and has over twenty-years experience playing in a variety of musical ensembles including concert band, jazz band, choir, bluegrass ensemble, and bell choir. She has performed many genres such as New Age, Classical, Traditional, Religious, Indie, Alternative Rock, and Jazz, occasionally playing other instruments as well. Her unique and vast perspective on many types of music further helps her students connect with and learn this art.
"I believe that if you were to give an individual the tools and knowledge needed to write or perform a song, their masterpiece would reflect the deepest depths of their soul. There is so much one can learn from this art form, especially when directly involved in its creation."
Students focus on becoming well-rounded musicians. All genres of music are taught, but if there is one particular genre that a student is interested in learning more than others that is perfectly fine. In conjunction with becoming a proficient pianist- sight-reading, music theory, rhythmic dictation, and creativity are emphasized. Lessons are relaxed, fun, and encouraging.
Some students also have the opportunity to be a part of music video shoots as the need arises, as well as have a chance to professionally record their own music if they are so interested.
Currently, only in-person lessons are available at Chelsey's home in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Students usually have one lesson a week, but some choose to come as little as twice a month or when guidance is needed.
Most ages are accepted as long as the student is able to have an adequate amount of focus and motivation. It is a huge help if they are able to read somewhat. (Younger students participate in an incentive program). Students studying with another teacher are also welcome.
What do you enjoy about the work you do?
"Each student is important. Because of this, customized worksheets, lessons, and even arrangements of songs are often created to help the individual understand and play to the best of his or her ability.
Patience, understanding, and mutual respect are important aspects of teaching and learning. As such, harsh criticism is absent from lessons to encourage continual learning."
