Hi, I’m Britta! I’ve been playing piano since before I can remember. I picked up guitar as a teen. I have been teaching piano lessons since 2016 and guitar since 2018. I approach music lessons with flexibility. The joy of working one-on-one is that we can adjust the lesson to whatever the student brings to the table each time. Practiced a lot? Excellent! Show me what you can do. Having a difficult time with something? Not a problem; let me help. Feeling fatigued? It’s okay; I understand. We’ll take it a tad easier today. I’m sensitive to my students’ needs, and I’m more than happy to make learning an instrument accessible, whatever is going on.

Generally, we start with a warm-up. Then, we proceed to go over the songs the student has been practicing since last time. I provide feedback and coaching. When we’re ready, we move on to new music and assign it for practice. I’m your guide as the music gets progressively more challenging. When time allows, we have several miscellaneous activities to choose from, such as theory, ear training, and review.

I offer 30-, 45-, and 60-minute lessons. 30 minutes each week is enough, and it’s a great place to start. More experienced students usually prefer 45- or 60-minute lessons. The longer the lesson, the more opportunities for repeated practice, covering more material, and faster overall progress. Whatever lesson length you choose, you’ll get a lot out of it!

I teach my guitar students using the Everybody's Guitar Method series by Philip Groeber, David Hoge, and Ray Sanchez. Younger student use the FJH Young Beginner Guitar Method series by Philip Groeber, David Hoge, Leo Welch, and Rey Sanchez. More experienced students can also choose to incorporate additional music into our lessons.

Up until March 2020, I offered lessons in-home or at my in-home studio. Now we are online only. My students and I meet each week on Skype, Zoom, or the TakeLessons online classroom. I guide and coach my students through their music and learning materials the same as before. I’m able to provide the same level of demonstration and feedback as before. If you have been uninterested in online lessons, as I used to be, I’d encourage you to give it a try! Like me, you may find it exceeds your expectations as a viable learning situation.

About Britta P.

Hello and welcome! My name is Britta, and I teach piano and guitar lessons online.

I have been playing the piano since before I can remember. I took lessons from an excellent teacher from age 5 to 18. During that time, I performed in one formal recital every year, as well as three other informal recitals with my peers. I also took opportunities to play at my school and church.

When I was 18, I was ready to perform my proudest accomplishment: George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, piano solo version. I had three performances, including one with an audience of a few hundred (part of a jazz band event). My other favorite composer at the time was Claude Debussy, and I worked hard to bring several of his dreamy pieces to performance level for my senior recital.

I was also part of a piano quartet for 3 summers. We had an informal performance at the end of each summer. Being part of the quartet was one of my favorite experiences ever. I would still participate if I still lived there!

In addition to playing piano, I played percussion in the school band from age 10 to 18. I also picked up guitar at age 13, and mandolin at age 15.

I still love to practice my instruments, and I still love to play for other people. For a while, I thought that was the only role music would play in my life. I was pursuing a career in education. At first, I thought I would teach ESL. Then I decided to try assistant teaching a 1st grade classroom. I spread my teaching wings a bit, but I still hadn’t found the right fit. Then, one summer, I found a free, gorgeous, 80-year-old baby grand piano. As the lovely piano settled in by the front window, it dawned on me how perfect it would be to teach piano lessons. I transitioned into teaching piano lessons the next year.

It’s been almost 5 years now. About 3 years ago I began teaching guitar as well. Up until March 2020, I offered lessons in-home or at my in-home studio. Now we are online only. My students and I meet each week on Skype, Zoom, or the TakeLessons online classroom. We are each seated at our own keyboard.

I am so glad I decided to teach music lessons 5 years ago, because I have been loving it ever since! I’ve honed my teaching skills over the course of over 4000 lessons.

Playing an instrument can be an absolute joy! Put in a little time consistently, and you will be amazed what you can do. Let’s take a moment to appreciate just a handful of benefits, just off the cuff.

1. The joy of observing progress and growth – fast.
2. Cultivation of creativity.
3. BRAIN POWER.
4. Constant opportunities for self-expression.
5. Reduces stress.

Britta was so encouraging for my 8 year old nephew who is just starting out on the piano. She's flexible (had to reschedule a couple of times) and kind which creates a comfortable learning environment.

We tried a group of 5 lessons just to see how it went. By the fourth lessons he seemed to be enjoying them so I asked if she'd like more. She agreed right away but the truth came out later. Turns out that she's not entirely thrilled with piano but she loves the time with Britta.

Britta has a gentle way of guiding the lesson and has incorporated some of my daughter's song interests as well. It's helping to keep her interested and motivated to practice.

It's a win - win in my opinion!
Thanks, Britta!
