I have been a performer and teacher based in New York since 2005. I received my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School, an Artist Diploma from Yale University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Stony Brook University. My experience as a teacher includes having been a faculty member at the New York Music School and the chamber music coach for the school's Summer Intensive Program since 2014. Previously, I was a Teaching Artist at Yale University and a faculty member at the Music Academy of Long Island, where I taught violin, viola, and cello. My students have won top prizes at several competitions, including the International Grande Music Competition, the Rondo Young Artist Competition, the Prima Volta Music Competition, the Crescendo International Music Competition, and the New York Young Virtuoso Competition. I've also helped them prepare for and be accepted into the top Pre-College and Prep programs in NYC, and to get into the top youth orchestras. I am the 1st violinist of the Deka String Quartet, with whom I held residencies at the Banff Chamber Music Program in Canada, the Bowdoin Music Festival in Maine, and the inaugural New Music for Strings Music Festival in Denmark. Most recently with the quartet, I served as a SUNY Artist-in-Residence through the Rockefeller Institute of Government, giving performances and teaching students from SUNY Schenectady and the Empire State Youth Orchestra. I am also a core member of the highly acclaimed New York Classical Players, and have performed with other renowned New York based ensembles such as Sejong Soloists. I've performed as a soloist with the Tampa Bay Symphony, the Central Florida Philharmonic, the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Young Artists Orchestra, the Sewanee Festival Orchestra, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, and others. While most of my professional experience is from being a New York based violinist teaching and performing around the world, I grew up learning the violin in Orlando, Florida. I am a Trinity Preparatory School alum, and was concertmaster of the Florida Young Artists Orchestra for many years.

I have had many coaches and teachers over the year and often they fell into either of these two categories: - Very analytical, lot of focus on technical issues, but rather dry and uninspired musically. - Very emotional and inspiring, wonderful performers themselves. But they struggle to be helpful when I encountered technical roadblocks. Prof. Bak was the first teacher I have had that somehow managed to have the best of both worlds. An extremely sensitive musician who feels the music deeply and is able to transfer that inspiration to his students; while at the same time, he is incredibly patient and analytical when needed to assist students with their technical issues or musical understanding (such as harmonic structure, or historical background of the pieces). Absolute gem of a musician/teacher to find!

Dr. Bak taught both of my sons for several years. Every lesson had a goal, and he always gave clear instructions to reach those goals. My sons improved very much from working with him, and came to appreciate music more! He also helped write very helpful recommendation letters for them when they were applying for colleges. Thank you Dr. Bak, you're the best!

I’ve had Mr. Bak as my violin teacher from my elementary school years to now! He explains everything until I clearly understand and I always look forward to the lessons during the week. In the end, the pieces I play always puts a smile on my family and friends. Every year I saw growth and my violin skills improved more and more. I cannot believe how much I have grown from the lessons that I have taken!!
