I'm a professional singer, composer, and arranger with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Vocal Performance. I've toured throughout the United States and several countries in Asia.

I teach all ages and welcome beginners. My lessons are customized and catered to the needs and goals of each student. My students can work on vocal techniques and improvisation (e.g., scat singing, melody changing, etc.) over their favorite songs. If they would like, I can help my students build a solid foundation in music theory, composition, and arranging.

I've taught older students who have a passion for jazz and also younger students who are exploring the many wonderful aspects of this music.

Above anything else, I'd like to make sure my students are having fun and expressing their love for singing!

About Aya I.

Aya Ishida is a New York-based vocalist and composer specializing in Jazz.
Originally from Japan, Aya moved to NYC in 2013 to pursue a B.F.A in Jazz Vocal Performance. She developed her sound and style by studying with Steve Wilson and Carolyn Leonhart.
In 2017, Aya graduated from The City College of New York under the Kaye Scholarship with Degree Honors Magna Cum Laude.
Her 2018 debut album, Day by Day, was produced by the Grammy award-winning saxophonist Wayne Escoffery. Day by Day is a culmination of Aya's experience as an artist and reflects the pursuit of her dreams in NYC. Alongside her original compositions, it also includes her favorite jazz standards with her own arrangements. Soon after her album was released, Aya returned to Tokyo to continue composing and performing Jazz for audiences throughout Asia.
In 2019, Aya completed tours in Japan, Taiwan, and Paris. She moved back to NYC in October and now performs regularly with a diverse group of musicians.

I started taking lessons with Aya about three weeks ago and they have been great! I'm a former jazz vocalist who is getting back into singing with hopes to perform again in the near future. Aya is a patient, knowledgeable, and fun teacher. With her guidance, I feel confident that I'll be able to regain the voice I once had. I highly recommend her!
