I hated piano as a kid!! Lessons felt rigid, obligatory, and really hard. It wasn't until I got to high school and started exploring my own musical interests that everything turned around. That's why I love to ask my students what music they like: because music should be fun, personal, and inspiring! There's nothing like that moment when a student is shining with pride when they get the hang of their favorite song or a familiar tune. That's what I strive for as a piano teacher, and I do that by getting to know my students and by being friendly and flexible in the moment. We can start with a song you want to learn, or I can lead the way with fundamentals at an appropriate level. Whether it's classical music and traditional lessons, or pop music and reading chord sheets, we can make it work! I've been playing classical piano for over 20 years, and I also studied jazz and pop piano in college. I earned a B.A. in Music from the University of Pennsylvania where I studied music theory, history, styles from around the world, etc -- and I sang in a jazz band! After college, I started teaching beginning/intermediate piano to students of all ages and of different physical and intellectual abilities. (Note: I also have volunteer and classroom experience with students with special needs, including some ABA training.) I accompanied a friend and neo-soul artist in gigs in Brooklyn, Oakland, Los Angeles, etc. and recorded some compositions together as well. Nowadays, I'm having fun studying some Beethoven and accompanying myself singing. I also dabble in guitar, bass, and drums, and play in a rock band with my best friend. Let's chat!
