Hello there! If you are reading this then you or your child must be interested in learning how to read and play music. I am so excited for the journey you are about to begin!
My name is Amy and I am a certified music teacher. I graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelors degree in instrumental music education and I also earned my Master's degree in Band Conducting at American Band College via Sam Houston University in 2015. My primary instrument is clarinet. I have taught instrumental music for 12 years in the valley.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities, especially beginners! I teach beginner lessons in piano and brass instruments, beginner to intermediate level woodwinds, and beginner to advanced high-school level clarinet.
*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with me will be tailored to each student's needs and goals, however note and rhythm reading will be a strong component in each lesson - especially for beginners. I have a very laid back and patient personality but I do feel that practice at home is very important and expect it from my students in order to give them the best chance at success.
As a general rule, young students (under 12 years of age) as well as anyone with less than a year of experience on the instrument will likely do best with a 30 minute lesson. More advanced students may opt for the longer 45 minute lesson.
Students with intermediate or advanced ability on their instrument will have the opportunity to have lessons directed towards specific interests such as preparing for chair placement tests, honor band auditions, or solo and ensemble festivals.
*** Required Equipment ***
I have a full size (88 key) digital piano with attached pedal in my home studio for lessons. It is extremely important that students taking piano lessons have an instrument to practice at home - a keyboard is fine if an electric or acoustic piano is not available.
Students playing wind instruments will need to bring their own instrument and supplies (reeds, oil) to their lessons.
Students should rent or purchase an instrument prior to beginning lessons. If you are uncertain what brands are best I would be happy to provide assistance so please don't hesitate to ask any questions that you have before making a decision.
*****Parents and Guardians*****
Parents are welcome to run errands, take a walk, or stay in the car during lessons if that is their preference, just be sure to return on time.
There are comfy chairs to put your feet up and magazines for parents who like to stay for the lessons.
*** Specialties ***
Working with beginners of all ages.

Amy has been great for my daughter who is just learning piano for the first time. Very kind, calm, and patient and encouraging. Just what we would want in a piano teacher!
She is really patient, easy going and understanding. She explains things in a way my son can understand. Recommend!
My son loves Miss Amy! He never once gave me a hard time about going to his piano lesson even when I was pulling him away from playing with his friends. Amy is so patient and supportive and always made my son feel special. I am truly grateful for everything she has done to help my son learn and understand music better. Thank you, Amy! Amy was a great teacher. My daughter is shy and she was nervous to be a beginner with a flute. Amy was patient with her and made her feel comfortable. I would recommend Amy for any nervous beginner.
Amy was very pleasant & worked well with Justin.
Amy is awesome! My son just turned 5 and his attention span is very short, but Amy is able to keep him on track. She is very patient and always go over the material with me, so that I understand it and I am able to help my son practice at home. I really appreciate her teaching style.+ Read More
Amy is Awesome :o)
It would be very difficult to sum up all reasons why Amy is a wonderful music teacher. Amy provides a positive and judgment-free zone for her music lessons. She is both encouraging and inspirational. When my daughter becomes frustrated with a new note or technique, Amy simply reminds her that she is more than capable and all she needs is practice. I appreciate the time and thought Amy puts into making music selections that will both challenge my daughterâs playing abilities while retaining her attention.
We highly recommend this teacher!
Amy is a highly talented, bright, thoughtful and dedicated piano teacher. We couldn't have asked for someone better to introduce our daughter to the piano. She is patient but she gently pushes our daughter beyond her comfort zone. This is the piano teacher you are looking for...
Very patient and helpful. Our daughter was getting frustrated with learning her notes and Amy gave her some great tools to help her.
My daughter, who is 5 1/2, responded really well to Amy's instruction. This was her first exposure to the keyboard. Amy is a patient teacher but expects she students to be accountable - practice and pay attention in class. Her patience, positive attitude, and kindness shine through at each session. We took only 6 classes with Amy while we had access to a piano while staying in Arizona while my husband was here on business. I wish we could continue lessons with Amy back home. We certainly will continue with lessons now that Amy has laid a positive foundation.+ Read More
Amy is fabulous. She works very well with my daughter and myself. We just recently moved to this area and weren't sure what to do when music lessons were not offered at my daughters school. We found takelessons.com and we found amy and we are thrilled. She is friendly, knowledgable and talented. Were very happy!
Thanks Amy for teaching Miriam. She is learning a lot from you and really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see her play piano like an expert someday. Thank you so much!
Review for AMY Z
My daughter and I both think that Amy is an awesome teacher! She is very professional, patient and kind. Amy gives excellent, detailed feedback, with the right mix of encouragement, as well as highlighting areas that may need improvement. My daughter is switching from the clarinet to the saxophone, and she is struggling with the new embochure, but Amy is very patient with her, and lets her know what to do to be successful. I would highly recommend Amy to anyone considering private lessons
