Bachelors in Music, String Studies
About Alexander S.
I am a professional cellist with several years of experience on Violin, Viola, Double Bass, Piano, and Voice. I graduated from Long Island University with my Bachelors of Music concentrating on String Studies.
Students can expect to find an environment that will allow for an easy way to improve each week. Whether is technique, expression, rhythm, music theory, or any area that we explore that can use more foundation, I will provide you with a structured way to achieve your goals. You can expect a release in tension through the lesson and be able to play and perform with more freedom and confidence.
I am available to provide lessons for all ages and levels of experience. I have always had a medium to connect to music throughout my life. I began first studying the Piano at the age of 6 and progressed onto string instruments throughout grade school. My passion for music drove me to want to understand more about what I loved. In university, I studied Cello as my primary instrument which provided me with several hours a day to connect to the Cello. I also studied piano and voice for my four years there with amazingly talented and well known musicians. My experience at college also provided the opportunity to get to know the predecessors of our modern day instruments. Performing on period instruments such as viols and the harpsichord gave me a deeper understanding of the inner workings of our present day instruments.
I teach piano students of all different ages and experience levels. I studied classical piano for 16 years, and contemporary keyboard for 7 of those. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.
My experience at college provided me the chance to travel and perform in highly regarded performance halls such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Tilles Center. I have toured Europe performing with a string ensemble and a choir which allow me to learn and share music in several countries and cultures.
My personal passion in teaching music is finding ways that provide an ease to learning something new. Being educated in Alexander Technique, I brings me much joy to find a release in tension when road blocks arise. I will work hard to make learning easier to understand and grasp, releasing any built up tension and anxieties along the way.
