Guitar in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is a great place to learn how to play the guitar. In addition to a wide range of music teachers, the city offers numerous opportunities to listen to live guitar music. From symphony concerts to jazz clubs to rock shows, there is something for everyone. If you're thinking about taking guitar lessons in Oklahoma City, be sure to explore one or more of the following options to supplement your guitar lessons in the city.

Local Music Venues While it's fun to hear live music in a large arena, there is nothing quite like sitting mere feet from the musicians. Oklahoma City is home to several intimate music venues, including The Blue Door and The Blue Note. The Blue Door is a premiere venue for new and established rock, blues, country, folk, and bluegrass songwriters. Just a few of their notable past performers include David Lindley, Jimmy Webb, Tom Rush, Joe Ely, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. The Blue Note has been a top destination for live jazz and blues for more than 60 years. Most of their live music nights have a $5-$8 cover. For more information, check out their websites below: 1. The Blue Door: http://www.bluedoorokc.com/ 2. The Blue Note: http://thebluenotelounge.com/

Local Universities Local colleges and universities are also great places to hear live music in smaller venues without breaking the bank. University performances let you check out some of the newest performers on the music scene while keeping up with the current music trends. Check out the music calendars for several local schools. 1. Music Festivals The biggest music festival in the greater Oklahoma City area is the Norman Music Festival (NMF). This free, independent music festival takes place in Norman, OK in late April. Founded in 1998, NMF features musical groups and solo acts from multiple genres in both indoor and outdoor venues. Originally a one-day event, the festival has grown to fill two nights as well as one full day and night with music and arts. (http://normanmusicfestival.com/)

If you don't mind traveling further afield and shelling out for a festival ticket, think about attending the Backwoods Camping & Music Festival. It takes place in Stroud, OK during the first weekend of September. Backwoods started as a small gathering of local Oklahoma musicians and artisans and has expanded into a three-day music and arts festival that features national headliner acts. You'll be able to enjoy fantastic indie rock, jam band, and electronic music on multiple stages while taking in the gorgeous wooded setting. (http://backwoodsmusicfestival.com/)

Oklahoma City Philharmonic The Oklahoma City Philharmonic is a renowned orchestra that has been performing for the greater Oklahoma City area and beyond for more than two decades. Each year they feature classics, pops, and family concert series. If you're looking for guitar music, your best bet is the pops series. The Philharmonic brings in top-notch guitar players from all over the world for rock music nights (i.e. the music of The Eagles), musicals features, movie nights, and much more. Best of luck with your guitar lessons in Oklahoma City, and may you enjoy the many local music events and resources the city has to offer!
