I start with assessing the students' capabilities, after which I begin to develop the following areas: Development of their sound; Instrument Technique; Jazz Improvisation and Jazz Language; Theory and Jazz Harmony; Study and Development of Students' Own Repertoire. Depending on the level of the students and their needs, I push certain areas more or less. The key to becoming a successful student is to practice, to develop a good technique, but also to listen to a lot of music to develop the talent for music. Therefore I encourage my students to listen to a lot of records to understand the right sound.

About My Lesson Style ...I encourage the students to listen to the music, and above all, I encourage them to enjoy it, while teaching the discipline. The study will not be a burden if the student has fun while playing. One of my goals is that, at the end of the lesson, the students go home with the desire to play again and again. I also think that learning, and preparing oneself to ...

Saxophone is such a fun instrument to play because it is all about style. The more energy and dynamics used, the greater sounding a piece will be. In addition to focusing on technique, I teach to understand the passion behind the song so that it's not only fun to listen to, but also to play.

About Jacob

I am a multi-instrumentalist from Upstate New York. I started playing guitar and saxophone 10 years ago and simply couldn’t stop! Over the years, I picked up ukulele, clarinet, mandolin, flute, among others, studied voice at Ithaca College as part of their BFA MT program, and have become a singer/s

My goal as a teacher is to provide an in depth understanding of the instrument to my students. Whether we are learning technique specific to the instrument or general musical concepts, it is important to me that I take the time to insure that my students not only learn how to do something, but also the reasons why we are learning a specific concept or technique. At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, so that you may enjoy playing the instrument outside of our lessons together.

I prefer not to conform to a specific teaching style, because every student is different, and I have been fortunate to have a great variety of types of students throughout my years as a teacher. Some of my students are children and adolescents who are looking to pursue music when they go to college or auditioning for state and regional band programs. Many of my students are very busy adults who are either looking to pick up an instrument for the first time as an ...

I figure out exactly where you are in your technique and knowledge of music and of the instrument. Then, I start teaching from there! For me, the goal of lessons should be the goal of the student, and I do my best to honor that while pushing my students to surpass those goals.

In my career, I primarily play the tenor and baritone saxophones, but I play a lot of alto and soprano as well. Additionally, I also play the clarinet, bass clarinet, flute and piccolo, and help out a lot of my more advanced saxophone students with doubling on these instruments.

I encourage my advanced Jr. High and High School students to audition for various honor groups throughout California and the country such as SCSBOA, CBDA, JBOA, etc. With my background in these groups, I can effectively help my students prepare for the best audition they can do.

"Awesome Sax Teacher

Bill is a great teacher. Teaching an adult to learn an instrument for the first time is not an easy task. Bill has tons of patience even when I don't find the time in my busy schedule to practice. He mixes class time with both practice and theory, and it is always interesting and challenging. He isa super cool guy who invites me to go watch him play. I haven't had a chance yet but am looking forward to seeing him rock out. I have already recommended him to a few friends of mine."

"Nick Stow! I learned a great deal from his private lessons. He understands how to gradually work into good and exceptional habits for practicing as well as performing. I only wish to have had more of an opportunity to perform with and learn from these lessons. As I said, it takes time and patience to come to the skill level Nick is at, but he'll work with you to grow a level you can start to excel at."

She doesnt just teach to simply learn just enough to play an instrument but rather to master not only the instrument but the whole philosophy and theory around music as well..Simply put her teaching style is that of attending a music college but much much less spent and more one on one instruction"

Choosing a Neck Strap | How to Play Saxophone Tips

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...    The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
