The saxophone family is full of potential for a wide array of colors and textures and can be played in a variety of styles: classical, jazz, funk, Afrobeat, rock, and more. I've played saxophone for 15 years, and I teach my students through exercises catered to their musical passions. In addition to the basic technical elements of playing, I focus on listening across the musical spectrum. I encourage the use of long tones and air support to improve tone, flexibility, and all repertoire.

About Emily

Woodwind instrumentalist Emily performs regularly in a range of styles including classical, jazz, rock, funk, Afrobeat, Third Stream, and musical theater. I have been teaching privately and in colleges/schools for over 15 years. For all levels, I will help you develop excellent technique on the saxophone and build a strong foundation in music theory. For advanced/intermediate students, I also teach jazz improvisation, if you’re interested! Please bring in the music and songs you want to work on. I believe lessons should be fun and interesting while you learn great stuff, too!

About Dan

Hi, I’m a professional tenor and soprano saxophonist. I graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelors in Jazz Performance. I also have an MA in Jazz History and Research from Rutgers University. I enjoy helping students to develop improved technique, sight reading, and musicality.

Dan is a great teacher and musician. He is highly knowledgeable as well as motivating.
I started playing saxophone again after years of not playing.
But playing on my own quickly got me to a level where I didn't make much progress anymore and started to lose motivation.
Dan picked me up where I was and got me back into practicing.
He is very good in structuring the lessons and the practice to fit your goals and skills.

Dan is really a great teacher.. firstly, he’s personable, friendly and creates rapport with the student, By asking your interests he makes the lessons about YOU by accommodating those interests and the WAY you want to learn.

I’m an adult and have no interest in traditional approaches to learning an instrument; I’ve been there, done that and found it not only terribly uninspiring (twinkle little star anyone?) but In every way overly difficult by trying to mix too many skills together at the same time. Before you even have a relationship with and “feel for” your instrument and have the technical skills to play it even half way decently, you’re trying to understand how long to hold a dotted eighth note! This is the reason a lot of people quit playing before they even get started…

Dan knew exactly what I was talking about, met me there and then proceeded to get me to do more in one lesson than I probably would have done in a week on my own, and in the way I want to learn!! He knows how to meet you where you are, find your self prescribed limits and then push you through them! He’s truly skilled in all the ways a teacher needs to be effective with a student!

I highly recommend hiring Jorge since he goes over the information at a good pace and nice manor. He will go over whatever you need help on.

"Dr. Wen was the best professor and lesson instructor I have ever had. I took lessons with him for over seven years starting in high school and throughout my entire college. He shares his expertise in music theory, techniques, and instrument mechanics. He really helped me gain confidence in my playing abilities, showed me how I should be practicing in order to get the most of each rehearsal, and taught me so much about myself as a player. His ability to instruct on every aspect of playing the instrument is something I really admire. Need help rhythmically? He will help you understand time, measurement, and notes. Need help technically? He has all the ways to practice to get that much closer to perfection and how to maintain it. Need help with scales? He will help you to truly understand the scale in order for you to play it better. Not only will he help with the "how-tos," he will explain the why. Needing help with breathing techniques or articulations? He will take you through exercises that will enhance every aspect of your playing. He sets the standards high, and helps you reach your goals. I will always recommend Dr. Wen!"

"Being new to the online lesson format, I was skeptical at first, and have waited about 5 lessons to write this review. I am really glad we (randomly) picked Lucas to help my 6th grade son get started with saxophone. I'm so impressed with Lucas' ability to gauge through at at times imperfect internet connection what feedback to give my son. Lucas is excellent at giving instruction in understandable, and usable bites of information. The lessons are well paced and I can hear my son improve over the course of every lesson. The convenience of the online lesson cannot be overstated- we live in a rural area where finding an teacher and getting to a lesson was challenging to fit into our schedules, so it is amazing to have such great instruction on a schedule that fits in with our life. I would definitely recommend Lucas specifically, and the takelessons format to anyone looking for saxophone lessons."

"I got a free Alto Sax from a former coworker, and after several years of not having played Clarinet, I felt I could use some guidance from an awesome woodwind doubler like Eric.

The convenient part for me was that he's one of my good friends! I can say both as a student and a friend that Eric is a consummate professional, and is incredibly qualified to teach students of any level how to play the Saxophone. If I had 1/3rd of the Sax chops that Eric has, I'd be gigging right now."
