My approach to teaching involves combining work on technical fundamentals and transcription. I find that starting with detailed technical practice makes the achievement of a player's goals quicker, and transcribing from recordings adds real playing experience and is invaluable for building musical vocabulary.

A life-long learner myself I understand the need and satisfaction of continuous progress! Helping my students to learn and advance is one of the biggest rewards of lessons. Tutoring includes: Technique, music theory, reading, ear training, and more. All lessons are geared to the type of music you like to play, but what you'll learn can apply to all styles of music.
I'll set-up (adjust your instrument so that it plays as easily as possible) I’ll also teach you basic set-up and maintenance so you can keep your bass in top condition.

Contact me to discuss your interests, specific needs and to schedule lessons!
The lessons could be given at my home or yours, and any school/college rehearsal room or venue location in New York.

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as wel

David was/is a great guitar teacher ! I came to him with some knowledge on how to strum but he completely transformed my technique... making it easier & better to play! I’m looking forward to continuing my lessons with him & improving my guitar skill!! I Highly recommend David !

Very grateful to have found David on this site and add to the chorus of great reviews. I have entered the world of music through the bass guitar with David's instruction and am already hooked. Bass is a fascinating (and challenging) instrument so I appreciate working with a professional who caters to beginners. I am looking forward to exploring more about music with each lesson and gaining more confidence playing this instrument. Thanks David!

David has been immensely helpful in getting me on my way to understanding timing and getting me through some of my mental blocks. In 2 months with David, I feel like I understand more about music than I ever have. His explanations are clear and that makes all the difference in the world for me. He has an abundance of patience, knowledge, and a passion for music. I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but I'm closer than I've ever been...All thanks to David.

I have been playing the bass guitar as my primary instrument since 2000. I have performed, recorded and written with a number of successful bands in the past. I am happy to take students at any skill level, and for any style. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

About Ben

Hi, there! My name is Ben and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have taught students of all ages from 3 to adult. Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).

He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

David is a bright and multi-talented musician and teacher. He has shared his passion for music with my two daughters, teaching them piano. He is patient and kind. His approach strikes a perfect balance between imparting theory, technique and mechanics and being silly and having fun! Both of my daughters really enjoy him and look forward to their weekly lessons. The two girls are very different in their strengths, interests and personalities. He tailors his lessons to each of them to play to their strengths and tastes beautifully. And he is always positive and encouraging even when they are squirrely. I can't recommend him highly enough.

"I was excited, but intimidated going in because I'm convinced I am musically-challenged. As a beginner, Mike made it easy not to get discouraged so early on. Ahmad covers a lot in 30 mins. I like that he gives a variety of things to work on, and provides ample feedback on ways to improve. This is perhaps the best lessons I've ever found."

"Mike taught Leo in person before the pandemic started and has been doing online lessons with him for the past eight months. He is amazing with both. Leo has a very short attention span, but a deep love for music. Mike has been able to hold Leo’s attention every week for over a year — even during online lessons. Leo has become an awesome little pianist, and has developed a love for the piano. It has given him the ability to express all of his feelings and has helped his attention span for his schoolwork. Mike has so much patience, and always inquires about Leo’s favorite activities. He is great with kids and makes them feel so comfortable. Leo loves his “booming voice” and the free play blues music they get to play together every lesson."
