I do a variety of styles in music for the violin. I use whatever method (book or teaching style) is needed to teach what the student needs to learn. I have been teaching violin for 25 years. Depending on age, we will start in either Essential Elements or Suzuki. All beginners will start the bow after they can read the first 8 notes. All intermediates will be able to play 2 octave scales from 3 sharps to 3 flats as well as well into Wolfhart book 1. They will also be able to shift into third position cleanly and will be starting on vibrato. For Advanced players, we will be working on Concertos, sonatas, and partitas if they wish to go classical. IF they wish other styles, we will have started that in intermediate. All students will have an opportunity to go through the music development program, if they are interested.

About Chris
I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. I am a member of American Strings Teacher's Association, National Association for Music Educators (Maryland Music Educators Association), and the Music Teachers National Association (Music Teachers Association of Charles County). As a teacher, I'm very student oriented. We move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. I do encourage learning to read music, but I use multiple ways of teaching to reach my students. Everyone learns in a different way. My primary job is to see you achieve your goals in relation to your instrument. I also encourage that you take every opportunity to perform. There are many groups in the area that allow for different ages and styles of music
. I can help you understand what is going on behind the music and hopefully see what the composer was hoping to convey, if that is something you want to know. When I was a student I always wanted to know "why?". As a teacher, you will know why if I do.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to keep my lesson area as stress free as possible. It's OK to make mistakes in my studio. I would like you to bring a notebook to lessons as well as your music and instrument. I write as much as I can down because if you were like I was during lessons, I would forget everything I was supposed to be watching for after 3 days. Like I said above, we move at your pace. The more you practice, the faster we move. Questions are a good thing. It shows interest. But sometimes you just have to stop asking questions and just take the leap of faith.
We start with note reading as well as proper form and the parts of the instrument. We also deal with general care. I will tune your instrument every time you come in for lessons until you learn how to tune it yourself. We will review the day before, I will check on what work you've done and then move onto the next song/ technique etc. After we learn how to pluck the first 8 notes, we start with scales and bowing.

After that we move through the "usual" routine. Scale, etude, song(s) or school test songs, audition requirements etc.

I try to keep the same routine because for some students it's easier for them to focus if they know the lesson is going to move in a familiar way. It's reassuring. After we become proficient in the basics, we move into whatever genre you would like to play, within reason. If you are in the school orchestra we will work towards you getting an A.

I would say I'm more laid back when you are not preparing for an audition. Auditions require a lot of work and I want you to do as close to perfect as possible. I become fairly demanding during that time.

In about 6 months, you can play almost any tune you can hear on the radio. Explaining where you could be gets fairly technical and I might as well be talking like Charlie Brown's teacher.

*** Studio Equipment ***
at the away studio: music, music stand, stool, piano, laptop, tuner, metronome.

at home: music, music stands, chairs, computer, laptop, keyboard, microphone, tuner, metronome.

pictures of the away studio are posted.

*** Specialties ***
I am familiar with Paul Rolland's work, Valerie Bobbett Gardner's Violin Virtuosity, as well as Guillespie's. I was brought up Suzuki but haven't been trained in Suzuki. I have taken classes on how to teach to a variety of students so I could hold a teaching license in the state. I do participate with (Canadian) The Royal Conservatory of Music Music Development. This is active in the US also.

Special note: If you are allergic to cats, you will want to take lessons at my other studio location, not at the home.

IF you are contacting me with questions, please include either take lessons or lessons in the subject area so I can find you faster. I get a lot of junk mail and it is easy for me to miss a note from you.

If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

I've been teaching String Instruments like Guitar and Violin for Beginners and Intermediate level for many years.
In Teaching Violin for my beginner students, we usually review the basics of how to play the violin including how to hold the violin, violin tuning, violin fingering , violin bowing and violin care. My students also do warm-up to strengthen and improve their violin playing with violin scales, violin etudes, and violin exercises.
For my Intermediate violin students, we refresh our memory of the fundamentals of music theory such as how to read violin music, rhythm and key signatures.

OMG my excitement is through the roof after my first lesson with Humberto! I can't even get my feet to touch the ground. I am an adult, basically starting from scratch picking up my violin for the first time in 20+ years having played for a year as a kid. I was so nervous, and feel silly starting at such an elementary level, and Humberto's instruction was not only expert, but his enthusiasm was completely genuine. He was authentically supportive every step of the way and thrilled at every moment of progress. His infectious smile made me feel so safe being a novice starting over and so excited for my next lesson...which he's not teaching me in Spanish since he learned I need to practice my dusty Spanish skills as well! Couldn't recommend him highly enough, love love love Humberto and can't wait til next week's lesson!

My students build technical proficiency and musicianship through a variety of personalized exercises, etudes, and pieces that encourage their creativity and a love for all kinds of music. Most importantly, they have lots of fun!

About Selena
I offer beginner to advanced violin lessons for all ages. I have gotten to perform in many different ensembles and styles. This allows me to adapt to students' interests. Having taught privately for over a decade now (has it really been that long?), I have developed many ways of explaining specific concepts since one student may understand it perfectly if explained differently than how another student grasped it. Teaching violin is one of my greatest loves because I get to constantly see students fall in love with music and violin.

The violin has been a constant and enriching presence throughout my life, and I enjoy helping people engage with this instrument that is demanding and rewarding in equal measure. No matter your age or level of expertise, I would be happy to help you along as you discover new musical territory. I’m most fluent in the classical style, but am happy to explore other areas with you as well, from bluegrass to Broadway.

About Kris
I have been teaching the violin to students of all ages and abilities for close to twenty years, and have had great satisfaction in seeing them all grow and develop over time. Some of my younger students have gone on to the Interlochen Arts Camp, and one of my former adult students still makes an annual summer pilgrimage to a chamber music festival in Ullapool, Scotland. Whatever your interest or ambition, I would be more than happy to help you along your way.

In addition to teaching, I am currently a member of the Delaware and West Virginia Symphony Orchestras, a former member of the Huntsville, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and have performed as a substitute violinist with the Virginia Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Maryland Symphony, and National Philharmonic Orchestras. I hold a BM in violin from George Mason University.

Hey there! My name is Carly. I recently graduated from the University of Maryland with a duel degree in Environmental Science and Sociology. I've played the violin since I was six years old. I've been apart of several groups ranging from classical, hip hop, rock and musical theater.
I'm looking to help less experienced string players find their voice through music. I may not be the concert master of the BSO, but I am incredibly passionate about teaching my students. I believe I differ from other teachers because I base my lessons around the student's preferred learning method and personal goals. My ultimate goal for my students is to teach them self expression. Self expression is healing, incredibly useful, and fuels us with energy and creative thought. I often try to incorporate pieces my students are interested in learning because I believe this is the key to regular (and enjoyable) practice.

Currently I have a wide array of students. The youngest is 8 whereas the oldest is 73. ...

About Carly
Hey there! Here's a little about the violin lessons that I teach.

For me, the absolute best thing about teaching violin is watching the student realize they've accomplished something they once struggled with. It's so fulfilling when my students are proud of the work they've put in. Becoming a violinist can be a lot like putting together a 2000 piece puzzle. It's really difficult at first, and there's a lot of different pieces you don't know where to put yet. Often times you just have to take a break, walk away, and come back to it later because you've been staring at it for way too long. You might leave feeling like you barely put any of it together, but don't fret, the next day is always easier! Eventually, pieces of the puzzle start to form into distinct parts of the picture, and you have a greater sense of intuition for where all th
e remaining pieces will go. The process itself gets easier down the road, because you've developed strategies and have spent so much time looking at your goal, i.e the finished picture on the box.
My role in this little analogy is to ensure you like the puzzle enough to keep going, give you hints on where to put pieces, and to show you the things you've put together that might have otherwise gone overlooked. All of which are easy for me to find simply because I, too, have done this puzzle before!

As a private music instructor for more than five years, I am passionate about creating a teaching environment that is uniquely suited for each student’s needs. I teach violin and viola lessons and have experience in traditional/modern classical violin and viola, historical performance (baroque violin and viola, renaissance and medieval fiddling, etc.), and have dabbled in folk, bluegrass, jazz and Irish fiddle tunes as well. I'm happy to teach people of all ages and all levels of experience. I received my Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and studied viola performance and pedagogy at the Peabody Institute before completing my Master’s in Baroque viola. I am currently working on a Graduate Performance Diploma in Baroque violin at Peabody.

About Stephanie
I am a professional violinist and violist, performing regularly in the Baltimore-DC area and elsewhere. I received my Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, my Master of Music from the Peabody Institute, and am currently pursuing a Graduate Performance Diploma from Peabody.

I have been teaching professionally for more than five years, working with violinists and violists of all ages and experience levels. My goal is to cater to the specific needs of each individual student, and to work together to overcome any individual challenges each student may face.

I have studied various pedagogical techniques to develop my own style of teaching. My teaching style is heavily influenced by that of Karen Tuttle, who advocated for a physically free and natural method of playing. I also like to incorporate tenants of
music theory, ear training, and history into lessons in order to provide a more complete and balanced musical education.

Having studied various styles and eras of string performance, I am happy to explore repertoire from various styles, genres and time periods. I enjoy working with students on the type of music that they love and feel passionate about pursuing, whether that be standard classical repertoire, Irish fiddle tunes, or something else entirely.

In addition to violin and viola lessons, I also offer lessons in baroque violin and baroque viola. I specialize in historical performance and am happy to either focus exclusively on early music or even supplement modern training with information regarding historical practices if the student is interested.

If you're not sure about a particular style of music that you might be interested in, or for beginners and/or young musicians, that is no problem at all. I look forward to exploring different music with you and finding the music that you love to listen to and play.
