Hello! Glad to be back in the neighborhood! I am a professional pianist, vocalist, songwriter, actress, director and teacher. I have a lifetime of experience in the performing arts (I started performing at 6 years of age) and many years teaching music and theater arts! What are you looking for? If one of the answers to this question is a teacher who truly understands how to communicate in an understanding and fun way...then let my years of experience help you to achieve your goals. I have taught many students of all ages and levels in private, public, and workshop environments. I always try to get to know my students - learn about their musical experiences as well as skill level; tastes; and what they want to achieve at the piano. I teach in the classical method and specialize in applying this method to various genres such as pop, rock, jazz and Broadway! I have coached students for the Young Musicians Festival (The Schubert Club of CT) and all of my students were judged

Love Sharon! My 13-year-old daughter takes voice lessons with her and Sharon is funny, positive, and very energetic.
My daughter has said she would not go to anyone else. Sharon is great with young students and getting the most out of them, especially if they’re a bit shy. We look forward to seeing her every week and I highly recommend her as an instructor.

I highly recommend Sharon as a piano instructor. She is very enthusiastic, encouraging and patient. Also her way of teaching is amazing. I am an adult beginner who had taken a few lessons with another instructor before. Though I did pick up some terminologies, I like the way Sharon goes back to basic and teach me the fundamentals without assuming me know it. These are essential for me to progress further.

I honestly don't know where to begin. Sharon West has helped me in so many ways! Not just vocally but in all aspects of performing and in life. I was a 13 year old little girl when I met Sharon for the first time. I immediately knew she was the person that was going to help me achieve my goals. I don't know how I got so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing, caring and loving vocal coach but I was totally blessed! Thank you, Sharon for all that you have done for me. Love you lots Sharon

I'm a product of the piano school of Tobias Matthay at the Royal College of music in London. I studied with two of his proteges, Frank Mannheimer and Denise Lassimone, as well as Trinity College of Music, London. I can teach anyone from preschoolers who can't read music to advanced colleagues.

About John
My job is to get your child crazy about the piano. If you have to nag your child to play, something is wrong. The basics are, of course, important, but until you have gotten the child to accept and love the piano as an object of enjoyment, all that practicing will go nowhere.

How do I do it?

I think it's easier to learn the piano if you are having fun, and that means playing music that you like.

You can always choose what you will play in lessons, and lessons are designed around your preferences, and move at a pace comfortable to you. The basics are still taught, but at a pace that your child finds comfortable. The result of this is that I will get your child to go the piano and play by themselves with no nagging.

I have had the complete classical conservatory experience, yet that doesn't mean I expect that of you in any way,
especially kids.

For children, the best start involves games and immediate playing to give the child a taste of the real joy of making music. Reading exercises have their place, but not at the very beginning.

I want you to play a song you know and enjoy your first lesson, and I can easily help you do that.

It's in your interest to play meaningful music, (to you) right away. It is possible for anyone can play music far more complex than what they can read on a page, so my first goal is to get you started playing real songs on your first lesson.

Education: BA University of California, Berkeley. Graduate work at University of Southern California Film School, Trinity College of Music, London.
Emmy Award winner, music direction. Broadway veteran. Recordings with American Symphony Orchestra released Sterling Records.
Advanced Piano lessons using the European tradition, pupil of Tobias Matthay School (London) and Denise Lassimone (Paris)

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I want you to start playing right away, with less emphasis on deciphering sheet music and more on the immediate physical sense of the keyboard. You have to enjoy playing by any means before you are inundated with the page. Reading music follows soon, but not before you can play music you like.
If you're more advanced, I can help you with technical development, and begin to widen your musical senses.

*** Studio Equipment ***
1926 Steinway A

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide Books and Musical Literature. Students must have instrument, electronic or acoustic.

*** Specialties ***
I teach any style of music that you prefer. I also accept students with disabilities and special needs.

John's biggest strengths are his patience, understanding and seeming endless facility with music. I read music but not fast enough to allow me to play good pieces, so John translates everything into physical movements. This makes it very easy to play interesting music, which makes me want to play more. I think he has shown me how learn, how to refine things so they are satisfying. I highly recommend him as a teacher, for beginners or advanced.

My son is six years old and has been taking piano lessons with John for six months. John is a unique and engaging teacher. His extensive knowledge of music and skill at the keyboard were apparent from the beginning. He can easily demonstrate a multitude of songs and then teach them on the spot. My son is excited to play a "whole song," be it Sponge Bob or Beethoven. John's teach-by-numbers technique appeals to my son's love of numbers and patterns yet he is also quickly learning how to read sheet music. John really is skilled at disguising a lesson on technique or theory as a game. He is goofy while at the same time encouraging and supportive of my son. He keeps it light, fun, and skill appropriate. Since he comes to our home, I also appreciate John's focus on the lesson - he arrives and departs in a timely manner. I highly recommend John as a piano teacher.

If you want to learn how to begin playing the piano, I am you man. I focus on scales, selections, and cadences to help you learn the beginnings of piano playing. I can take you through simple four part melodies with pedals, playing from a lead sheet, and even a bit of transposition. A small amount of music theory will be involved in your lessons.

About William
Hello everyone. My journey into teaching has opened up so many doors for me and has made me a better instructor. I have been participating in music programs from the age of 3. Music is my passion. I have learned many instruments along the way, and I have pressed through to achieve not only my academic aspirations, but my personal goals as well. I tailor my lessons to my students, pin pointing what we need to work on, and reinforcing what is already going well. I can come to you in person, or via internet. My goal is to help you reach your goals musically, and to encourage you in your journey to becoming a musician.

When my son was 11, he decided to take piano lessons. Mr Montavo, asked him why he chose that instrument and proceeded to have a conversation about the importance of practicing and not giving up. He is an amazing pianist and has a good knowledge of how to help kids succeed and grow as a musician. He helps with educating the parents on what kind of keyboard, piano, and music is best for your child
