When I first begin teaching a student, I tell them that everyone has the ability to sing well no matter his or her experience. I also tell them that there are four things that a good singer must have: breathe control (air is your fuel, and must be used efficiently and effectively to give you the best sound), posture (in order to have access to your air and prevent vocal damage you must practice good posture habits), diction (how you pronounce words when singing can impede or improve vocal tone, as well as help or hinder the audience in understanding the lyrics) and finally and most importantly, passion. Passion is how emotionally connected you are to music and is what really allows the singer to connect with his or her audience.

In short, Rachel is a wonderful, attentive and expert vocal teacher!
I have studied jazz vocal ten years ago and always struggled with confidence issues when singing. They have gotten so bad that I've stopped singing for long enough to let my voice get out of shape. But if you are reading this, you probably feel what I've felt - life without singing is a little gray. Fortunately, I've found Rachel, who has a gorgeous voice and whose music tastes and sensibilities are very similar to mine. Rachel makes me feel at ease, she listens carefully to my goals and identifies actual (vs. my own imaginary) issues with my voice/technique. Mostly importantly she was able to explain to me the processes and techniques of singing that other teachers couldn't. Rachel is an optimistic, massively encouraging presence, she is precise and like a doctor will hear what is happening in your voice and observe/correct your technique. She will guide you and prescribe you the exercises and songs you will need to progress. I highly recommend Rachel as a teacher."

If you've been taking singing lessons for a while, you've probably practiced several silly warm-up exercises. You know, the ones where you're making funny faces and sounds, saying nonsensical phrases, and so on. All of these exercises have one common goal: to prepare the voice and help you learn to keep your mouth and throat open. Read on as Seal Beach instructor Carl B. explains why vowels are important for this very reason... A few years ago I coined a phrase that clarifies the import …
