I access singing and speaking through movement and resonance. We discover the way your body moves freely, opening up the breath and getting it to flow freely. Then we discover how to access your resonance with that freely flowing breath. Singing and speaking comes easily from there. Lessons with me are a combination of yoga class, anatomy lesson, and actually making sound. I find that if we see our voices as another part of the body that we're training, we see that singing is a movement technique, and looking at it that way actually gives us the freedom to make art with it.

About Gwendolyn

I'm an opera singer with seven years of stage experience in Germany and the US, including top houses like the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, and, since moving to the Bay Area, I have worked with Opera San Jose and Lamplighter's Theater. I have a MA in singing fr

Gwendolyn is my first vocal coach. She is helping me to access the power and confidence in my speaking and singing voice. Using full body movement and vocal exercises she opened up a world of singing for me that I never knew before. She has helped me to discover my body as an instrument (crazy right?!). Gwendolyn has a tremendous amount of knowledge on the mechanics of the body, the way sound is made in our bodies and of course music! I am more powerful and confident in my voice than I have ever been. Gwendolyn is amazing!!
Monika
Working with Gwendolyn brought forth several break throughs even after just one session. She intuitively guided me into alignment, and with such efficacy & ease, my connection to body and breath continues to deepen now, months later. The work I've done on my own or with other teachers came to a (an aligned, you could say) clarity while working with this gifted teacher - definitely recommend!

Gwendolyn is the best! I loved her yogalign class. She’s so warm and open and made me feel really comfortable just being myself and trying new things.

Mr. Malchik is simply an outstanding, excellent teacher. Not only is he knowledgeable in music performance and theory, he is also joyful, enthusiastic and patient with my child. The many things my child has learned include, but are not limited to, how to read treble and bass clef, proper sitting and body posture, left and right hand finger techniques for scales and arpeggios, and how to play chords. Along with this training, he also encourages my child to have creative freedom - to enjoy music by playing songs she has either composed herself or heard outside of lessons.

It is my great pleasure to recommend Mr. Ley M. to you as a music teacher to your child. I am writing as a parent of a son who has benefited from Mr. Ley M.’s phenomenal instructional ability for the Elementary School Music Program in Newark, California, as well as in private music lessons.
Mr. Ley M. is passionate about music. His love for the art is evident in his enthusiastic and energetic teaching techniques. As the music teacher for the Elementary School Music Program with the Newark Unified School District, Mr. Ley M. is exceedingly patient with all students, encourages them, and coaxes the very best effort from each and every child.
We were very fortunate that Mr. Ley M. was able to provide private tutoring for my son beyond the after school music program. My son has made tremendous progress in learning to play the clarinet. Mr. Ley M. has given my child a strong musical foundation-learning the correct embouchure and fingering techniques to play the clarinet, increasing proficiency in reading notes, timing, and hearing pitch.
Although Mr. Ley M. is one of the best music teacher in the area, his prices are extremely reasonable. In my opinion, he is worth every penny he charges and I certainly believe I have received excellent services for my money. I am tremendously grateful to Mr. Ley M. for everything he has taught my son and the joy of my son’s music playing has brought to our family.

Randy is a great singing tutor. He’s patient, flexible and encouraging. My son is a little reserved boy and not comfortable at expressing his feelings, and Randy helped him reading through every phrases before the singing. That was very helpful. Thank you Randy!

Very knowledgeable and patient. Broke down challenging concepts and problems in very understandable terms. Saved me hours a week of having to read my child’s textbook and watch YouTube to teach my child what he wasn’t understanding from his middle school teacher.

In addition to being one of the most educated, well-versed, and talented teachers I have come across in my 2 decades of performing, his passion for music and all that is art is extremely evident. He instills a faith in his students and co-performers that lets you know he believes in you and your potential, and ensures his dedication in assisting you to learn, grow, and bloom both musically and artistically.

Getting Inspired to Sing in Oakland

It’s a great time to be a musician in the Bay Area! The live music scene is hot and getting hotter as new clubs open and opportunities increase for local musicians to perfect their craft. Oakland is a friendly city when it comes to new artists. Many clubs offer nights that feature up-and-coming local musicians, and there are plenty of open mic nights around town for you to explore, get on stage and show your stuff.

If you’re taking singing lessons in Oakland, supplementing your lessons by attending live performances is a great way to stay inspired and grow as a performer. As a vocalist, your instrument is always in demand! Living in the Bay Area with its thriving music scene, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch a show, no matter where your musical interests lie. Here are a few local opportunities to check out a show, jump on stage at an open mic night, and network to make some new connections!

Live Music Venues From local musicians, to the top regional, national and international artists, they all make their way to the Bay Area to perform. If you love traditional and folk music, the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley is a great place to go! It’s a non-profit community arts organization that offers a variety of regional and ethnic music that celebrates the culture of peoples throughout the world. In addition to a full schedule of performances, The Freight & Salvage offers workshops and weekly folk/bluegrass jam sessions. (http://www.thefreight.org/)

Another Berkeley pub that offers an eclectic musical lineup is The Starry Plough Pub. Since 1973, The Starry Plough has been serving up live music seven nights a week from some of the best artists from the Bay Area and beyond. If you’re interested in hearing traditional Celtic music, Sunday evening features a Celtic jam session where singers are invited to sit in and show their stuff! It’s the perfect place to go and jam after your singing lessons in Oakland! (http://www.thestarryplough.com/)

If your taste runs to edgier music, two Oakland clubs completely fit the bill! The Stork Club and The New Parish are two staples of the rock scene in Oakland. Both clubs feature live music seven nights a week. Performers include local regional and national touring acts and run the gamut from punk and hard rock, to alternative and indie pop.

Colleges and Universities The Bay Area is home to several colleges and universities that feature performing arts as a part of the curricula. Mills College offers a full program with an emphasis on performance with many programs open to the public, often free of charge. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk to other young aspiring singers. With programs offered running the gamut, from jazz performance to classical and chamber music, Mills showcases many talented young musical leaders of tomorrow! (http://www.mills.edu/academics/undergraduate/mus/)

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is the oldest independent conservatory on the West Coast and is another fantastic place to check out the great classically trained vocalists in the Bay Area. With several performance venues on campus, you can see intimate performances of classical and chamber music, as well as operatic recitals year round. As a vocalist, taking singing lessons in Oakland is just the beginning of your education! It’s important to listen to other singers both for inspiration to continue your studies, as well as to further your learning experience. The Bay Area is home to a wide range of musical talent; so be sure to get out there and experience some great live music!
