It’s a great time to be a musician in the Bay Area! The live music scene is hot and getting hotter as new clubs open and opportunities increase for local musicians to perfect their craft. Oakland is a friendly city when it comes to new artists. Many clubs offer nights that feature up-and-coming local musicians, and there are plenty of open mic nights around town for you to explore, get on stage and show your stuff.

If you’re taking singing lessons in Oakland, supplementing your lessons by attending live performances is a great way to stay inspired and grow as a performer. As a vocalist, your instrument is always in demand! Living in the Bay Area with its thriving music scene, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch a show, no matter where your musical interests lie. Here are a few local opportunities to check out a show, jump on stage at an open mic night, and network to make some new connections!

Live Music Venues From local musicians, to the top regional, national and international artists, they all make their way to the Bay Area to perform. If you love traditional and folk music, the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley is a great place to go! It’s a non-profit community arts organization that offers a variety of regional and ethnic music that celebrates the culture of peoples throughout the world. In addition to a full schedule of performances, The Freight & Salvage offers workshops and weekly folk/bluegrass jam sessions. (http://www.thefreight.org/)

Since 1973, The Starry Plough has been serving up live music seven nights a week from some of the best artists from the Bay Area and beyond. If you’re interested in hearing traditional Celtic music, Sunday evening features a Celtic jam session where singers are invited to sit in and show their stuff! If your taste runs to edgier music, two Oakland clubs completely fit the bill! The Stork Club and The New Parish are two staples of the rock scene in Oakland. Both clubs feature live music seven nights a week. Performers include local regional and national touring acts and run the gamut from punk and hard rock, to alternative and indie pop.

Colleges and Universities The Bay Area is home to several colleges and universities that feature performing arts as a part of the curricula. Mills College offers a full program with an emphasis on performance with many programs open to the public, often free of charge. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk to other young aspiring singers. With programs offered running the gamut, from jazz performance to classical and chamber music, Mills showcases many talented young musical leaders of tomorrow! (http://www.mills.edu/academics/undergraduate/mus/)

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music is the oldest independent conservatory on the West Coast and is another fantastic place to check out the great classically trained vocalists in the Bay Area. With several performance venues on campus, you can see intimate performances of classical and chamber music, as well as operatic recitals year round. Voice students can expect to learn how to produce tone beautifully, using correct posture and breathing, and proper vowel production, rhythmic precision, pitch accuracy, carefully formed phrases, and musical and stylistic interpretation. But beyond technique is the amazing art of communicating with other people the wonders of the music. You should expect to make good progress in all of these areas in just a few weeks. I hope you will come with serious interest in developing your beautiful voice.

Repertoire might include folk songs, art songs and arias from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, as well as compositions of the 20th and 21st centuries. Songs might be in English, or possibly in Italian, Latin, German or French, if you interested. We would sit down together and decide what dreams and goals you have, and then choose music to get you going down the path to those dreams and goals.

You can expect to have learned several new songs, and to have brought them

About Donna
I love to sing, and I have a passion for teaching students to sing well. I have sung in choruses all my life, and have been inspired by fine conductors and great composers. I am certain that music enlivens my life like nothing else, and it can do that for everyone. Whether you sing in the shower, or in the choir, or with a few friends, or in an opera, you can find your song.

Learning to play the piano, from the very beginning, or picking up where you left off in the past, will bring a spark to your life. Whether you want to play for yourself or some friends, or want to get on track to becoming a concert pianist, music will enrich your life.

My students develop an appreciation for music of the Renaissance up through the 21st century. They are willing to delve into exciting territory while learning to read music, establishing confiden
ce in their own musicianship. They discover the music within themselves, while learning the technique necessary to be the best musicians they can be.

I enjoy teaching high school, middle school, and elementary students as well as adults. I Love teaching beginners. I am trained in vocal pedagogy, music theory, music history, repertoire, performance practice and methods.

My formal education:
B.A., UC, Berkeley (Phi Beta Kappa)
M.A., Occidental College
M.S. Pepperdine University
Lifetime General Secondary Teaching Credential

Teachers and mentors:
Howard Swan, Mary Jones, Edward Lawton, Robert Commanday, Roger Wagner, Linda Anderson, Boyd Jarrell, Paul Smith.

In the last twenty years, I have enjoyed being a participant in music at the College of Marin, through choral, vocal, opera and piano classes. I currently serve as volunteer assistant to the Director of Choral Activities.

I am particularly proud of my experience as instructional aide and coach for music students with disabilities at the College of Marin, including students with developmental disabilities and autism.

Past classroom experience:
Long Beach Unified School District, Choral Music Teacher
Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, Choral Music Teacher
Low Heywood School and King School (prep schools), Stamford, CT, Choral Music Teacher

You can expect to have learned several new songs, and to have brought them to performance level in the first 3-6 months. If you have a goal to learn music for an audition, contest or festival, that can happen.

Piano students can expect to learn everything about the keyboard, posture, proper use right and left hands, scales, chords, arpeggios, and fun exercises leading to good technique, rhythmic accuracy, speed and fluency. Playing beautifully, with artfulness and expressiveness will be priorities.

Repertoire might include beginning to intermediate compositions from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, as well as compositions of the 20th and 21st centuries. We would sit down together and decide what pieces to choose which would help you get on a path to your musical dreams and goals, and what would be appropriate for your age and development as a musician.

You can expect to be playing pieces with 2 hands within a few weeks, and perhaps a melody with chords, if you are a beginner. Degree of difficulty will depend upon your age, experience and development, but even very simple songs can be played musically, with grace.

Of utmost importance to me is that every student learn to read music, and develop an understanding of music fundamentals. The level of sophistication will depend upon age and experience, but learning good musicianship is essential. At the same time, opportunities for creativity to develop through improvisation could be on the horizon for you. It is important to me that you want to learn and and want to become the best you can be.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a piano and computer with Finale at my home. I provide music and practice sheets, etc.

*** Specialties ***
For voice, I teach classical style, including posture, breathing, tone production, vowel production, phrasing, diction, appropriate style and performance practice, and music reading. Materials I use include everything from folk songs to arias, and 16th century to contemporary compositions, in English, Italian, Latin, French and German. Voice is my primary interest. I am also competent to teach beginning theory, and beginning piano, both classical and standard popular, including improvisation from charts (melody, chords).

Donna seems very good with my grandson, Jayden, age 7 3/4. Today was his fourth lesson. He was sick one week. She is very encouraging and sees that he has talent. I think she is setting a good pace for him. He struggled with wanting to go last week, but was fine with going this week. With six more lessons, there is every hope he will want to finish the 10 lessons course.

Mr.Conran is a great voice teacher with very effective techniques to help sing better. My son, who sings really good, was not able to do a good job with his voice especially when he performs in the concerts. But, after we start the lessons with Mr.Conran, he is improving and getting better in his posture and singing!. I am blessed to find a teacher for my son to excel in his talent.

I believe that the most important in singing is the opportunity to use your voice the way you want and feel in order to express yourself. No matter what style are you singing the vocal technique is fundamental.
My students develop technique, voice strength and vocal range, so they are able to express themselves as artists in various musical styles depending on their personalities.

Beginning voice students will be taught the basics in a fun but productive way. I will teach a strong foundation so a student can move forward with confidence. Lessons would be individualized to focus on areas that need the most guidance.

About Melissa
I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics. I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin. My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees. My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings. I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well.

What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

Singing has been my passion since the age of 4. The voice is very special - it empowers us to live the lives we desire, communicate with others, and express ourselves. It is my mission to help others discover and develop their voices, thereby freeing them to use it as they choose.

Beyond the functional voice, I teach performance skills, musicianship, music reading, foreign language diction, phonetics, and so much more! I have a Bachelors in Music Education, a Masters in Performance, and a performance resume ranging from jazz to opera.

I love working with singers of all ages and experience levels. I know how to engage with children and adults alike for a productive, enriching musical experience, so whether you are a sings-all-the-time 2nd grader, a recreational karaoke buff, a devoted choral singer, or an operatic baritone, you have a place in my studio.

About Paige
I'm so happy to meet you! My name is Paige, a California transplant from Texas by way of Tennessee. I've taught since 2007 and enjoy teaching singers of all ages and experience levels.

I have a Bachelors in Music Education with a K-12 certification in Vocal Education, as well as a Masters in Performance. I have a strong musical background, having sung in the Texas All - State Choir, University Interscholastic League, and National Association of Teachers of Singing.

When I am not teaching, I actively perform in the Greater Bay Area, singing jazz, choral music, and opera.

Over the years I've taken voice lessons to improve core skills. Not all voice teachers are the same! I started with Ms. Rapanan’s group class just to check out her skills and style of teaching. I discovered a truly great teacher who integrates her long-earned breadth and depth (classical to pop) styles of singing into her teaching methods. This is rare! I truly enjoyed her challenging and inspiring me to push my limits. And, she's fun to work with. She has a high-energy positive teaching style. Maybe what I like most is that she personalized my lessons; taking into account my particular voice, style, and, limitations/strengths. I have not found these teaching attributes elsewhere; knowledgeable with great command. Since she is a serious -but loads of fun- teacher, I totally endorse her for serious and committed students.

I am very patient and believe that with hard work and dedication, anyone can learn to sing! I have a piano at home and can train you to deliver amazing performances. You'll be ready for karaoke in no time!

About Cliff
I have over 20 years' experience in singing and vocal performance which includes a Bachelor's degree in vocal performance from Bucknell University. I have taught numerous a cappella groups and was a member of several vocal ensembles in the Bay Area, including the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and San Jose Choral Project.

I'm comfortable primarily teaching beginners, and am very patient and disciplined in my approach to singing. Preferably we'd be doing a series of warmups and vocal exercises prior to actually singing songs, but we'll get there! I have a bedroom in my house with a piano that we would use as our own private "studio," and I can also travel to your desired location if need be!
