Sing ANYTHING in the East Bay!

by Molly R. - Hayward Singing Teacher

Hayward, California is an absolutely wonderful place to be if you’re a singer of any age, style or level! As a voice teacher in Hayward (also known as the “Heart of the Bay"), I get to work every day with a wide variety of singers from all over the area. Do you sing or WANT to take singing lessons in Hayward? The options here are limitless!

If rock is your thing, then there are bands galore around. If you want to jam, there is live music seven nights a week at The Bistro in downtown Hayward. You can find even more opportunities nearby, especially in the Oakland area, which is only twenty minutes from Hayward. You may have heard of Green Day. They’re just one of the many bands that hail from Oakland! Since there are so many bands around, naturally, there are plenty of voice teachers in the area to connect with to help you achieve what you need for vocal stamina. That’s essential when you’ve got lots of gigs or auditions lined up!

How about opera? It’s everywhere here! Yes, even in the East Bay. You don’t have to drive to San Francisco to sing (or enjoy!) classical music. There are smaller companies such as the new Island City Opera in Alameda. Other Bay Area companies include West Bay Opera in Palo Alto, Fremont Opera, and West Edge Opera in Berkeley, to name a few. As you may know, opera singers require more frequent lessons than avocational singers, but the good news is that there are many reputable teachers in the area who specialize in classical singing. Many of these teachers are working singers themselves, performing with groups such as the San Francisco Opera Chorus. In fact, one of the top operatic training programs happens to be in San Francisco: the prestigious Merola Opera Program, in which only a handful of singers get selected to participate.

There is no better place to be a chorister than the Bay Area. Why? The numbers alone! This area has one of the highest number of choruses to get involved in. Hayward has barbershop groups such as Harmony Fusion (an all female group that competes nationally), community choruses like the Morrison Theatre Chorus, and award-winning high school choirs - such as Mount Eden High School, which has an impressive seven vocal ensembles and has toured and competed all throughout California! Moreau Catholic High School has another wonderful choral program, where individual students have been invited to perform in the All State Honors Choir.

Additionally, there is the Oakland Symphony Chorus, the Broadway Chorus in Pleasanton, and of course several more choruses in San Francisco (San Francisco City Chorus and San Francisco Choral Society are two that come to mind). Many of these choruses don’t require professional experience; just the desire to sing and make beautiful music with members of the community!

Lastly, musical theatre! Again, the Bay Area has endless opportunities for those who love Broadway. In Hayward, you can perform in musicals at the beautiful Douglas Morrison Theatre. Auditions are open to all. They also offer musical theatre singing classes and camps for young performers! The Lamplighters of San Francisco also offers workshops and camps in addition to a full season of shows. Their rehearsal space is easily accessible via BART of you come from Hayward. Additionally, Woodminster in Oakland offers three big musicals outdoors in the summer months and holds open auditions every spring.

Other excellent companies include TheatreWorks and Broadway by the Bay. Kids will just love the huge number of opportunities here, too. Companies such as Berkeley Playhouse offer special camps and shows for the younger musical theatre performer.

No matter what genre of singing you like or how old you are, you will find plenty to do for your voice while taking singing lessons in Hayward! You can easily to get to any of these opportunities or seize one right in your own backyard. The area is also known for its incredible diversity and creative minds. Now, go forth, and find one of the many welcoming voice teachers in the area to help YOU find your voice so you can start enjoying this wonderful singing scene!

I began singing at a very young age for anyone who would listen and began taking music and voice lessons shortly thereafter. I am a USC graduate and have also studied music privately for over 20 years as well as at the Vocal Power Academy of Los Angeles. My main musical styles that I perform and teach are Pop, Rock, Folk, and Americana/Country but I also have a background in Musical Theater. I specialize in creating a lesson plan that suits the needs and skill set of each individual student.

About Arrica
I was born and raised in Los Angeles but I've just recently relocated to the Bay Area. I am a Professional Musician/Songwriter/Vocalist teaching songwriting, voice, and performance technique as well as a combination thereof. I began singing at a very young age for anyone who would listen (so my parents tell me) and began taking music lessons shortly thereafter. I am now a USC graduate and have also studied music privately for over 25 years as well as at the esteemed Vocal Power Institute. I've professionally released several albums and I am grateful to have had my music featured/licensed by Starbucks, NBC, The CW network, NikeWomen.com, and MTV. I've toured extensively playing to audiences across the country and have had the honor of sharing the stage with artists ranging from Conor Oberst, Inara George, Johnette Napolitano, Martha Wain
wright, to Jackson Browne. I have experience teaching both adults and children, and enjoy teaching beginning as well as intermediate to advanced students. In addition to teaching privately, I have experience teaching children through my volunteer work with The Girls Rock Alliance, a non-profit organization that aims to teach young girls about self-confidence and self-expression through music education.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am easy-going, friendly and I believe that developing a great student/teacher rapport is the key to making the most out of the time we spend together. The curriculum I utilize is specifically designed to meet the student's individual needs. Initially we'll spend time assessing where you are and where you'd like to be. Most importantly, we'll set goals and create a lesson plan that will allow you to attain them. We'll work on basic techniques (or intermediate to advanced depending on skill level), for example - breath support, vowel placement, posture, relaxation, the fundamentals of song structure and music theory. We'll also work on the psychology of performance and eliminating any unwanted tension that may arise. We'll choose songs to work on that you'll enjoy singing, or analyze the songs you love in order to discover and/or improve upon your own songwriting abilities.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Front music studio area w/ guitars, computer with protools, keyboard, microphone, pa system, and seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide a small keyboard and/or guitar

*** Specialties ***
My main musical styles that I perform and teach are Pop, Rock, Folk, and Americana/Country. I specialize in creating a lesson plan that suits the needs of each individual student.

Arrica has been such a wonderful teacher for my 11-year-old daughter. (She was 9 when she started with Arrica.) Our girl has a lot of raw talent but needed some good instruction that wasn't too formal. Africa is just the right blend of traditional singing technique and fun rock-n-roll, record your own music on Garage band. We love her!

Whether your goals are for personal enrichment or professional growth, your lesson will be personalized according to what's important to you.
I LOVE to teach, and appreciate my wee ones just as much as my elders...those who consider themselves "tone deaf" as much as my advanced students. As far as Special Needs go - I feel we *ALL* have special needs....every child and every adult! ;)

As the creator and producer of San Diego IndieFest and Say It Records, I have a unique understanding of the industry, and love to share that with my students.

About Danielle
Hello Students / Parents!

I specialize in providing a fun, inspiring and safe space for each student to reach their goals - whether that be for the novice singer whose been wrongfully told they shouldn't sing, the more experienced singer looking to do more with their music, or the budding songwriter, actor or speaker looking to develop the talent and drive they feel within them.

I always remember the inspiration and patience I received from my best teachers, so I strive to provide exactly that to my own students. I sing and teach most vocal styles, with the exception of opera and screamo, and utilize my studio to create a supportive, empowering experience singing, speaking, writing and recording. I absolutely love teaching both children and adults and look forward to learning how to best support each one of my students in their indi
vidual path toward realizing their potential.

Here's a bit about my background and musical experience:

Bachelors of Fine Arts degree (Theatre/Voice) from United States International University Graduated Valedictorian
Chula Vista School of Creative and Performing Arts Graduated Valedictorian
Workshops and studying with Bill Doyle, Roy Mote, Andrew Barnicle, Jack Tygett, Leanne Summers, among others.

"After seeing Danielle, I was impressed with her intensity as a performer. Her ability to get behind a lyric was stunning, she lives every line. As an artistic performer, I've yet to see better."
-Tony Ferguson / Interscope Records: No Doubt, Bush, Fisher

My original band, Danielle and The Masses, has been recording and performing live since 2001. We are endorsed by Ani Difranco, The Black Eyed Peas, The Bruce Hornsby Band, and have shared the stage with artists as Jamie Foxx, CAKE, Metric, En Vogue, David Byrne, Berlin, Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Jonatha Brooke, Beth Hart, Semi Precious Weapons and more.

I have written and performed music and voice over for Ace Ventura, Nutty Professor, VH1, various TV shows and independent documentaries, Eveoke Dance Theatre, among others, as well as having recorded eight professional CDs of various styles on various record labels.

For over ten years, my record / production company, Say It Records has been producing socially conscious music events throughout San Diego and Southern California that promote independent music, film, art, community and human rights. I also co-own Durga Sound, a teaching and production studio, with producer Alicia Champion, as well as San Diego IndieFest, a powerful community event which promotes and supports music, film, art and civic engagement.

I have a great time utilizing my contacts in the industry to help my students get work/ press / entrance into the schools of their choice, etc. For example, I'm happy to report that just last year we were able to book eight musicians on GLEE, as well as lots more in other capacities including using their music in commercials and film and helping them get cast in local theatre and accepted into arts-centered schools.

*** Lesson Details ***
I start on the first lesson by becoming clear about what the new student's goals and desires are from there, we start developing technique to achieve those goals along with having fun right away doing what they came for - singing, writing, voice over, acting or using a combination of these things be it for professional purposes or personal fulfillment. Every lesson is personally customized to meet the specific goals of each student. As a teacher, I'm encouraging and fun, passionate and positive. While I'm definitely not "strict", I do appreciate focus and drive. However, I often work with people who have special needs and are working on developing those very things. I'm especially good at helping people through progress plateaus, roadblocks, stage fright, loss/ stress. Using music as a means of release and healing - for both kids and adults - is something I do a lot of and am very comfortable with.

As far as technique is concerned, I focus on utilizing posture, correct breathing and developing relaxed, strong support, so that the muscles are developed properly. We want the voice to develop without stress, enabling the student to constantly grow while steering clear of any injury that can happen as a result of straining, not to mention other habits that manifest when we sing without proper technique.

I strongly encourage students to record their lessons on a mobile device so they can practice easily on their own, and so they eventually have a record of how far they've grown.
We mostly use tracks to develop repertoire, prepare for auditioning and performances, and to have fun singing the music that excites each student the most.

*** Specialties ***
Using music, writing and voice as a means of expressing yourself, growing as a performance artist, coping in challenging times, as well as a means of going professional and earning income are all areas I specialize in. Utilizing proper technique and learning how to sing / speak safely is also an area I focus on a great deal.

Learning precisely what each student wants is the key factor in my decision on how to achieve their goals. For example, using Speech Level Singing is definitely entrenched in my teaching, but I may not highlight it as much for those who want a more classical sound.

I excel with the following: first timers, very young kids, students working through stage fright, artists looking to develop their own original project, those seeking growth in their process of writing / recording / performing, those who are interested in using music and / or writing as therapy as well as with amateurs who've always wanted to do something musical but who think they are "too old" or too "untalented/short/tall/ fill in the blank" to try. I believe we all have something to say with our lives - finding the voice within you can be an incredibly powerful and transformative experience!

The first lesson was a gauge my interests and expectations of the private vocal lessons so we could build a understanding of how to shape my lessons to fit my personal goals and needs. We progressed to breathing exercises, facial muscle exercises, and did a quick song that I felt comfortable singing for Danielle to hear my current vocal strengths and areas to focus for improvement.

I was pretty nervous about taking a singing lesson, as it's something I've never done in my life. I'm so thankful I got connected to Deborah. She's a fantastic teacher and taught me so much about how our body works to produce sounds when singing and what I am doing. From the first lesson I was already given helpful tips and ways to practice things on my own! I'm looking forward to more lessons with Deborah.

I teach vocal lessons for all ages and all experiences. I want to help people understand how their voice works, how to use it well and to ultimately enjoy singing. My lessons (can) include breathing exercises, warm-up exercises, sight-singing, ear training and then working on a specific song. Each lesson is crafted to my students goals and desires for personal growth and knowledge.

About Astrid
Teaching is my passion. Over the last few years I have worked with some amazing students of all ages. My youngest student was 2 years old and my oldest student is in her 70's and I absolutley love that! I have experience working with children with learning difficulties and students who get frustrated really easily. I love helping students fall in love with music, like I did growing up with my music teachers and professors. I am passionate about music and passionate about my students learning and excelling in their craft. I enjoy working with all ages and all types of music abilities. As a teacher I really push my students to understand music itself and spend time going over theory, which is super important. I would love to help you or your child grow and learn in their music abilities and hope to hear from you soon!

I love working with students to connect what they're most passionate about learning with comprehensive music theory and techniques. I also love to make music fun!

About Erica
I'm a professional singer, songwriter, and recording artist originally from Tanzania in East Africa. I love empowering students to discover the joy of music in every lesson.

I've studied music theory, voice, and piano at the college level, and I'm also a self taught guitar player.

For voice students, your vocal skills are like a muscle. I help you improve your vocal technique a little bit each week while you're growing your confidence and self expression as a singer.

For piano, I began learning piano as an adult (5 years ago) and I understand the challenge of learning the instrument from scratch. I can teach students to read music and play contemporary songs of your choice.

As a singer and songwriter, I've worked with famous artists in East Africa. I love to mentor students who want to become powerful songwriters and get i
nto performing and recording.

I look forward to working with you to grow into a better musician!

I love working with singers of all ages and experience levels. I know how to engage with children and adults alike for a productive, enriching musical experience, so whether you are a sings-all-the-time 2nd grader, a recreational karaoke buff, a devoted choral singer, or an operatic baritone, you have a place in my studio.

I am a classically trained singer who has branched out into musical theater, pop, and vocal improvisation. My work as a vocalist has been central to both my Bachelors and Masters degrees in music. I take a serious pedagogical approach, tailoring exercises and repertoire to the individual student. I believe that healthy singing, beginning with the student's awareness of their own vocal anatomy, builds confidence and ability.

About Kevin
Kevin Schwenkler began his study of music on the piano at the age of 8, followed by clarinet and voice in his early adolescence. He has classical, jazz, folk, and pop training on these instruments. Kevin holds a B.A. from Hampshire College, where he studied music- primarily classical singing- and mathematics. During his undergrad, he began to seek and employ a musical pedagogy combining stimulating, consistent practice and the simple joy of living musically. Kevin also holds an M.A. in music composition from Mills College, where he continually concerned himself with pedagogy through his position as a musicianship teaching assistant.
