I have been teaching piano in the Seattle area for close to ten years. I have worked with young beginners to intermediate and some advanced students. My methods are eclectic and I often draw from the Kodaly Method for beginners. I encourage my students to sing along while they play to reinforce learning, accessing multiple neural pathways.

I teach my students to read music and play with feeling and heart. I instill a love of music in my students by creating musical moments in them and expose them to a wide variety of genres and styles. Students will learn basic technique, theory, improvisation, and performance etiquette, all while having fun!

About Holly

I am an enthusiastic musician with a talent for teaching. I have worked as a voice and piano teacher in Seattle for over ten years. Previously employed at The West Side Music Academy in 2003-2006, I realized my passion for individual instruction early in my career. I studied Music Education under

Young multilingual (English, Cantonese, and Mandarin) piano and violin teacher who combines the formal traditional Eastern style of teaching, and the fun approach of Western style of teaching into his music lessons.

Fun lessons but also challenging
- I believes that fun lessons are easy to gain young student interest, but it often lack to give them motivation. In the lessons, I often challenge my students, let them be self-motivated and become a better musician.

Techniques
- I focus lessons on teaching proper techniques with their instruments. With my experiences in taking lessons from American, Chinese, and Russian teachers, I learnt a great spectrum of techniques and like to teach what I had learn.

Learning pieces and other related topics
- Playing pieces and songs is only a small piece of playing an instrument. In lessons, I also teaches proper music theory, and ear-training.

I haves students from age 4 to retirement age. Early beginner to preparing for college ...

I decided to wait until middle age to begin taking piano lessons so that my brain would be as resistant as possible to learning.

I'm glad I found a teacher as patient, friendly and knowledgable as Laurel. I've been taking lessons with her for almost a year. She tailors the sessions to my spooky interests and encourages me to push my abilities.

When we began I had barely touched a piano in my life. Now I'm able to read sheet music, recognize relative pitches and play a list of my favorite songs with independent hand movement.

I'd recommend Laurel to anyone who wants to learn piano regardless of age or skill level.

Laurel has been my kid's piano teacher for a little over four years now. My kids absolutely love her, and I think that is what makes the difference because I want my kids to enjoy taking lessons. Laurel is very knowledgeable and patient. She makes sure students learn both reading music and playing by ear. My kids have come a long way with reading music and playing the piano, and I think a big reason is because of Laurel.

Although I was only able to have a few lessons with Laurel due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was extremely happy with Laurel's expertise and style of teaching.

I previously played the organ but had stopped for many years. She helped me get back into playing and provided new theory techniques that I had never learned previously.

I personally do prefer in-home lessons vs on-line. If there is a time in the future for in-home lessons to re-open I will definitely reach out Laurel to continue my lessons.

"I started trying to teach myself piano until I met Ms. Arth. On the very FIRST lesson she pointed out some bad habits and quickly resolved them. This allowed me to reevaluate my technique and iron out the basics. I plan on continuing my studies with Ms.Arth and I highly recommend her for any student beginner or advanced. "AMAZING music teacher!

I have been taking lessons with Mike since I was age 5, and am now age 25. Mike was the first person to make me feel passion and love for music. He helped me discover my talent by allowing and encouraging me to play by ear and was always incredibly supportive, patient, and kind. Lessons with Mike make me eager to practice the piano daily and I have ALWAYS looked forward to our next lesson together because of the fun and easy-going environment he creates. If it weren't for Mike, I would not continue to play the piano as often as I do as an adult. He goes above and beyond for his students and I would HIGHLY recommend him as a teacher. I know I will take lessons from him for as long as he's still teaching!"

I had been teaching myself piano for many years when I reached a point where I was not improving and realized I needed a teacher. Sharon helped me work on my weaknesses as a musician and had a good eye for pieces that helped me build on my strengths. We always had fun working together, and she was always good about working around my busy schedule."
